Well-known for his illustrative work, including Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel Les Misérables, French artist Émile Bayard’s Siege of Paris is on view for the first time at SLAM. The six-foot-wide painting, on view in Pauline Gehner Mesker Gallery 205, also coincides with the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition. About us
The Saint Louis Art Museum collects, presents, interprets, and conserves works of art of the highest quality across time and cultures; educates, inspires discovery, and elevates the human spirit; preserves a legacy of artistic achievement for the people of St. Louis and the world; and engages, includes, and represents the full diversity of the St. Louis community supporting it. The Saint Louis Art Museum was founded in 1879, at the close of a decade that saw the establishment of art museums in great cities across the eastern half of the United States. What began as a collection of assorted plaster casts, electrotype reproductions, and other examples of good design in various media rapidly gave way to a great and varied collection of original works of art spanning five millennia and six continents. Today the quality and breadth of the Museum’s collection secure for it a place among the very best institutions of its kind.

The Palace of Fine Arts, now home to the Saint Louis Art Museum, had 11,000 works of art on display during the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. By comparison, SLAM today typically has around 2,400 works on view at any given time (around 6 percent of the Museum’s current collection of more than 38,000 pieces). Of that massive number of artworks on view 120 years ago, around two dozen works with ties to the fair have made their way back to SLAM over the decades. Exhibition curator Nichole N. Bridges, the Morton D. May Curator of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, has answered a few questions about the exhibition on our 1 Fine Arts Blog, linked below. https://lnkd.in/eGMX4HwS

Decades before electric lighting became accessible in homes across the United States, architect Cass Gilbert designed two ornate, electrified candelabras to illuminate the former Palace of Fine Arts in 1915. The new light fixtures, plus the addition of two stone benches, were a distinct improvement to the front lawn of the building, which was originally built for the 1904 World’s Fair. Peter, John the Baptist, Dominic, and Nicholas of Bari in the Saint Louis Art Museum’s collection, artist Piero di Cosimo depicts four Catholic saints—one of whom is painted in the guise of Florentine politician Piero del Pugliese (1430–1498).
