Oregon is designating October 5, 2024 Ostomy Awareness Day to help the public understand that ostomy surgery can save lives. Governor Kotek has agreed to issue a proclamation for the day to show support. This is an important step toward raising awareness and education on the topic. Public education is key so that people living with ostomies won’t face discrimination and can live healthy, normal lives. By teaching others and raising awareness, we can erase the myths and stigma around ostomies. Salem Health is proud to shout out Malinda B. Close, assistant nurse manager at Salem Health Advanced Wound Center, for being instrumental in getting this day recognized. Thanks to her submitting the request to Governor Kotek we are able to celebrate this accomplishment! Her efforts continue as she works with the United Ostomate Association of America to bring back the Ostomy Support Group and be able to provide space for patients to commiserate with others. 📸 (left to right): Jane Raddatz, ostomy patient, and Malinda B. Our new Breast Care Center is officially here! The breast cancer care at Salem Health gets a new location and expanded space to serve the more than 400 patients each year, from diagnosis to survivorship, who we care for at the Salem Health Breast Care Center. We marked the opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 1. The new location adds a dedicated space including larger exam rooms and two procedure rooms to continue to provide high quality, multidisciplinary care from the team which includes a breast surgeon, physician assistant and breast nurse navigators. You’re invited to the Salem Health Breast Care Center ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 1. The event begins in the Salem Hospital courtyard at 10 a.m., followed by a patient testimonial and continues with tours of the new space at 10:30 a.m. While the Breast Care Center has been in operation since 2019, the new location will provide dedicated space to support our patients and breast care community. The new clinic — located in Salem Hospital Building C, across from the pharmacy — houses a breast surgeon and physician assistant (PA) who provide evidence-based care to patients across the cancer continuum, from diagnosis to survivorship. Also in the space are the breast nurse navigators who provide patient education and support related to diagnosis and treatment as well as financial, psychosocial, spiritual and other practical needs. “Patients need access to high-quality breast care within their own community in a dedicated space with everything providers and staff need to deliver excellent care,” said Patricia Luckeroth, MD, breast surgeon and Salem Health Breast Care Center Medical Director. The space features larger exam rooms, two procedure rooms and a wheelchair-ready restroom. “I am looking forward to having more space in the exam rooms to assist the providers with office procedures,” said Amanda Buntjer, CMA, Breast Care Center and gynecologic oncology surgery scheduler. There’s also a photographic mural of nature the staff love — it contributes to the welcoming, calming atmosphere the clinic hopes to provide to patients. “I am excited to be a part of this program and appreciate the support of our organization to offer our community a dedicated space for breast care services,” said Mary Hughes, RN, Breast Care Center nurse.
