The former assistant superintendent of Student Services joined SDCOE in March 2021 and has been instrumental in advancing SDCOE’s North Star goal to reduce poverty through public education. The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) received the Outstanding Service Award from the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council (SPC) for the work of the Student Wellness and School Culture department related to mental health and suicide prevention resources. The council recognized the work of the entire team, which includes Mara Madrigal-Weiss, Heather Nemour, Rachel Wegner, Violeta Mora, Roxanne Bellamy, and Donny Ojeda (pictured). “Over the decades, SDCOE and its Student Wellness and School Culture Department has taken lead in assuring that the schools in San Diego County have the best suicide prevention resources, programs, best practices, and overall knowledge and understanding with the greatest support team,” said Yeni Linqui Palomino, vice president for Community Health Improvement Partners, the organization that oversees the Suicide Prevention Council. The Student Wellness and School Culture team was recognized for the multitude of ways they support the Suicide Prevention Council and students across the county. Nutrition support for kids doesn’t stop when the school year ends. There are several ways for families to find sites in their community that serve meals to kids up to age 18 at no cost. Learn more about the options to find summer meal sites and about SUN Bucks, the summer-EBT program at https://bit.ly/4b9tljb. New this summer, families with students who qualify will have some extra summer grocery money. California SUN Bucks, also called Summer-EBT, begins in June and will provide an additional $40 per month ($120 maximum) in food benefits to eligible children to purchase food during the summer months of June, July, and August.
