There's a sailors' phrase: "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in morning, sailor's warning." What's that all about? We see the red because red wavelengths (the longest in the color spectrum) are breaking through the atmosphere; shorter wavelengths, such as blue, are scattered and broken up. During sunrise and sunset the sun is low in the sky, and sunlight is transmitting through the thickest part of the atmosphere at that time. At sunset, light has further to travel through the atmosphere. A red sky also suggests an atmosphere loaded with dust and/or moisture particles. As to the sailing adage about a red sky at night--the photo shows a Pacific Ocean sunset. This was a rainy day where there was still a lot of moisture in the sky. The next day was sunny--the adage was right: high pressure and stable air came in from the west, so good weather followed. #sunsets #redskyatnight #redsky #weather #sailingweather #weatherpredictions #sailormyths #climate #sunset #mexico

We achieved a milestone last week--debuting a hands-on program with Pegasus Voyages | The Pegasus Project and Thousand Oaks Elementary in Berkeley. Here are photos from the day: * Thousand Oaks 5th grader sees the Coriolis effect in action and begins to understand how storms are created. * Three small sailboats, each rigged differently, illustrate why masts get rigged in various ways. Learning points include a discussion of tension, compression, shear and bending, plus concepts in mechanical and structural engineering. * The Making Waves exhibit is a favorite exhibit. Building a structure to survive another student's tsunami is popular with 5th graders. #STEAMlearning #Stemprograms #saileducation #scienceforkids #berkeleyschools #sailinssciencecenter #sailingscience #pegasusprogject #peasussailing
