  • San Mateo High School student Siddharth Gogi spoke to an audience of more than 500 fellow high school researchers, faculty, and graduate students at UC Santa Barbara as part of their GRITx presentations on July 18, 2024. GRIT stands for "groundbreaking research, innovation and technology" and is generally a series of talks given by UC professors on their respective fields. This summer, as part of UCSB's pre-college research programs (which includes both the Summer Research Academies and Research Mentorship Program), Siddharth was selected out of a large applicant pool to present a GRITx talk-- a student version of the GRIT talk. Siddharth's talk focused on the environmental and moral implications of factory farming, and detailed some highlights of his dietary journey. Watch his presentation: https://lnkd.in/g_Xt2ucE

  • October is National Filipino American History Month! In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States. SMUHSD recognizes that efforts must continue to promote the study of Filipino American history and culture, so mandated in the mission statement of the Filipino American National Historical Society, because the role of Filipino Americans and those of other People of Color have been neglected in the writings, teachings and learnings of United States History. It is imperative for Filipino American youth to have positive role models and to instill in them the importance of education, complemented with the richness of their ethnicity and the values of their legacy. SMUHSD has an important role to commit to educating students and the larger community about the history, traditions, and diversity of the Filipino American community The proclamation can be found on our website (in English, Spanish and Tagalog): https://lnkd.in/gtZbjmvQ

  • October is LGBTQIA+ History Month! LGBTQIA+ History Month has been identified to remind all cultures within our wider community of the important roles LGBTQIA+ people have taken in shaping the social, cultural, historical, legal, and political worlds we live in today. SMUHSD appreciates and recognizes the importance of LGBTQIA+ History Month as an effective means of educating and calling to action our community members to work together by fighting prejudice and discrimination in their own lives. Increasing visibility, raising awareness, and teaching LGBTQIA+ history fosters a welcoming school climate where LGBTQIA+ students, families, and educators can live their authentic lives and be treated with dignity and respect. SMUHSD’s LGBTQIA+ History Month Proclamation serves as a call to action for educators, students and community members to find tangible ways to understand and honor the LGBTQIA+ community during LGBTQIA+ History Month and all year long. • October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month #NDEAM! This year's theme is "Access to Good Jobs for All." A major goal of the SMUHSD transition team is to connect students aged 16+ in Special Education to work-based-learning opportunities with community business partners.  The community business partners range from large corporations to small mom-and-pop stores.  Students are paid subsidized wages for their work-based-learning from the California Department of Rehabilitation and the WorkAbility grant while they learn entry-level skills that they can use to build their confidence, their resume, and their opportunity to have a positive reference for the future.   Do you know a business who may want to support our transition team's effort to connect students to exploratory work experience?  If so, please have them contact Eli Poblitz at epoblitz@smuhsd.org.   Learn more about our Transition programs: https://lnkd.in/g2sM2NkF
