Brian Beaudoin, P.E. and Timothy Petit, P.E. of Sanborn Head recently attended Casella Waste Systems’ New England Waste Services of Vermont (NEWSVT) 2024 Open House. Sanborn Head has been assisting Casella in this awesome community engaging event for many years which provides the opportunity to educate the public on how landfills are designed, constructed, and operated to serve the public and protect the environment. Tim manned Sanborn Head's booth and educated the public on how landfills are designed and constructed, and how landfill gas is generated, collected, and used to produce electricity at the facility. Brian provided tours of the facility that showcased the infrastructure including a landfill cell currently under construction, the equipment maintenance facility, leachate management systems including a state-of-the-art PFAS leachate treatment system, stormwater controls, and the landfill-gas-to-energy facility which provides power to 80 percent of Washington Electric Cooperatives customers. When asked about what he enjoys most about the event Brian mentioned, “As a solid waste engineer, it’s not often that you get to showcase all the engineering that goes into a modern landfill. I always enjoy giving tours at the NEWSVT open house as it gives me the opportunity to educate the public on how landfills are designed, constructed, and operated. It’s fun to see the public engaged in the tour, especially the younger audience who always asks some great questions and are quick to correct me if I say something wrong. This year I was asked if the bull dozers in the active landfill were Caterpillar D-11s and I said they were D-8s. I was quickly corrected by another young person that two of the dozers were actually CAT D-6s. Sometimes, I get an education too.” Casella’s team at the NEWSVT landfill does a great job at their annual open house and Sanborn Head is proud to be part of their consulting team. #VermontWasteServices #LandfillDesign #WasteManagement #EnvironmentalEngineering #LandfillGas #PFASRemediation #RenewableEnergy
