TSMC has officially started production of Apple’s iPhone chips at its Arizona fab, marking a significant milestone for U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. The first chip produced in this facility is the A16 SoC, used in the iPhone 14 Pro. While current production is small and considered a test phase, sources expect a ramp-up as Phase 1 of Fab 21 progresses, with full-scale production targeted for the first half of 2025. The chips are produced using TSMC’s N4P process, an enhanced 5nm technology. Despite yields slightly lagging behind TSMC's Taiwan operations, parity is expected soon. This effort is bolstered by a $6.6 billion subsidy from the U.S. government, part of the CHIPS for America Fund, and aims to generate 6,000 manufacturing jobs and 20,000 construction jobs. This project highlights the growing importance of U.S.-based chip production, especially as global semiconductor demand continues to rise.
