As the school year approaches back-to-school, you might be wondering, "How can I best support my child?"  We suggest modeling emotional regulation, teaching coping strategies, building their confidence, understanding shame, and teaching self-compassion. Utilizing these tips can help your child feel confident in themselves and their boundaries, and can give them the tools to navigate relationships both at home and at school. Navigating conversations about sex and sexual abuse with your child can feel daunting, but it’s beneficial for their safety and well-being. Begin by creating an open environment where your child feels safe to ask questions. Share age-appropriate information and remember, you are their primary source of information and trust. Communicate early and often, and admit when you are wrong or were not your best self, so the child feels safe to confide in you. By doing so, you can help reduce the risk of child sexual abuse and foster a strong, consistent pattern of communication that will help your child be prepared for the coming school year. Talk, educate, monitor, and support—these are the four strategies of our approach to preventing child sexual abuse. As your child prepares to return to school, it is important to implement these strategies in your home so your children are informed and prepared for the year ahead. Be your child’s go-to source for information about their body and sexuality so they are better prepared to recognize and avoid dangerous situations. And aim to create an open line of communication where they feel confident in sharing their feelings and emotions. While there is no guaranteed way to protect your child, these are a few things you can start doing today to reduce the risk and help your child feel well-equipped for the year ahead. If a loved one opens up to you about the abuse they experienced it is important to respond (not react) and ensure they feel heard and supported. Though it can also be painful for the family member receiving the news, if they respond in a manner that is hurtful, the pain of that response can be as impactful as the abuse itself. To help, here are some tips on how to respond to your loved one when they open up about their experience with child sexual abuse. For more resources visit https://lnkd.in/ga6UPezg

Our team had the honor of meeting with golfers last week during the Silicon Slopes golf tournament. We had the opportunity to share our mission and resources with golfers as they stopped by the 17th hole at the Alpine Country Club. We are committed to breaking the silence on the issue of child sexual abuse and educating communities.   Words are powerful and dialogue is critical to putting an end to child sexual abuse. We have two Kosher Saprea Retreats scheduled for this November. Thanks to our generous donors, this is a free clinically informed four-day experience for women who were sexually abused at or before the age of 18. The retreat chefs will work closely with Rabbi Avremi Zippel at Chabad Lubavitch of Utah to ensure the proper dietary framework for food preparation, processing, and consumption. To apply or to learn more about the Saprea Retreat, please visit Saprea.org. #Saprea #SapreaRetreat

Survivors of child sexual abuse come from all walks of life and may be dealing with trauma symptoms alongside their busy lives. It can feel overwhelming to acknowledge the feelings urging you to find relief, but Saprea is here to help. Our approach to healing has three parts.    1. Acknowledgement: Looking with clarity and self-compassion at where you have been in the past and where you are today. 2. Mindfulness: Purposefully paying attention with kindness and curiosity to the present moment. 3. Aspiration: Directing your thoughts and actions towards healing. These healing practices have identified as beneficial by our clinically trained and licensed staff of therapists but we also want to remind you that healing is cyclical and we are to here to help you through the various stages of your healing process.
