Wednesday, October 9th, 2024, marks Ageism Awareness Day, an important opportunity to bring attention to the often-overlooked issue of age discrimination. As a society, we frequently underestimate the value and contributions of older adults, which can lead to harmful stereotypes, exclusion, and missed opportunities for engagement. At the Sarah Ralston Foundation, supporting the well-being and dignity of older adults is central to our mission. In recognition of Ageism Awareness Day, we sat down with Lynette Killen, Executive Director of The Sarah Ralston Foundation, to discuss the challenges of ageism, the Foundation's efforts to combat it, and how we can work together to ensure that older adults are treated with respect and dignity. • Founded in 1817, by Sarah Ralston, the Ralston Center was Philadelphia’s first home for aging women and single women who had fallen on hard times. It later evolved to serve seniors’ health and wellness needs in West and Northwest Philadelphia. The Sarah Ralston Foundation (SRF) was spun off from this centuries-old institution to continue its legacy of service, dedicated to supporting underserved, vulnerable older adults in Philadelphia County. The Foundation is excited to announce a unique opportunity to join the legacy of Sarah Ralston. As we extend our influence and impact, we seek passionate, dedicated individuals to join our esteemed Board of Directors and help steer our mission. Board members play a crucial role in shaping the Foundation’s strategic direction, providing governance, and ensuring we meet our goals of funding nonprofits serving elders. We seek diverse candidates with various skills and backgrounds, including finance, governance, aging, and community relations. In order to provide funding to nonprofits that serve our elders, we offer two grant cycles per year: The spring grant cycle, General Operating Support, provides unrestricted funding to our grantees. The fall grant cycle, Innovative Project Support, specifically funds programs and projects that enhance the lives of our elders. The Sarah Ralston Foundation embraces trust-based philanthropy, ensuring a collaborative and transparent approach to grantmaking that empowers our partners and fosters mutual trust. “As a newly launched foundation, The Sarah Ralston Foundation is a platform for dynamic leaders who are dedicated to making a tangible difference in the lives of older adults in our community. This is an exceptional opportunity for individuals interested in making a significant impact within the senior-serving community,” said Lynette Killen, Executive Director. Interested applicants should contact Lynette Killen, Executive Director, at lkillen@sarahralstonfoundation.org. Join us in our mission to enhance the quality of life for Philadelphia’s older adults. • We had an exceptional time on Tuesday hosting "Supporting Older Adults - A Conversation for Nonprofit Agencies." The event was a collaboration between the Foundation for Health Equity (F4HE) and The Sarah Ralston Foundation, aimed at fostering dialogue and networking among nonprofit organizations dedicated to serving Philadelphia's older adults. The event took place at Braid Mill in the Philadelphia neighborhood of Germantown. Our gathering delved into Pennsylvania's "Aging Our Way" 10-year plan, an initiative focused on addressing the evolving needs of the aging population. This comprehensive plan, along with the latest draft of the “Area Plan” from the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, was at the heart of our discussions. These documents provided a springboard for meaningful conversations about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our community and the organizations that support it. Lynette Killen, Executive Director of The Sarah Ralston Foundation, shared valuable insights into these plans. Her presentations underscored the importance of collective action and collaboration in tackling the multifaceted issues facing older adults in our city. We were thrilled to see the enthusiasm and dedication from our nonprofit grantee partners, as well as those of the Foundation for Health Equity. The event not only facilitated insightful discussions but also provided ample networking opportunities, sparking new ideas and potential collaborations. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to this meaningful conversation! Your commitment to supporting Philadelphia's older adults is truly inspiring. For those who couldn't attend, we encourage you to learn more about the important work being done by our hosts.
