The new extension at Marseille Provence Airport Terminal 1 features distinctive coffered skylights that span wall-to-wall, flooding the space with natural light. This unique design not only provides a sense of structure and definition to the vast open-plan space but also naturally absorbs unwanted noise. Coupled with bespoke wall panelling and SAS200 concealed grid tiles, the overall system delivers Class A acoustic absorption to the Terminal. Foster + Partners deliver new extension at Marseille Provence Airport Terminal 1, bridging the gap between Fernand Pouillon’s 1960’s terminal design and Richard Rogers' 1990’s airside development. The extension aims to improve passenger journeys through simple, bright, and navigable spaces. The terminal features a new ‘Coeur’ (heart) that provides a more cohesive arrival and departure sequence through intuitive wayfinding. Featuring a combination of bespoke wall panelling and SAS200 concealed grid tiles finished in RAL9007 Grey Aluminium, this dramatic skylight box design enhances the natural light entering the space, significantly reducing the need for artificial lighting.
