Kevin Jackson, a Chicago man who has maintained for decades that he was wrongfully convicted for a 2001 murder, was released from a downstate prison on Tuesday pending the resolution of his appeal. This moment comes after the Illinois Appellate Court recently heard argument in his appeal of the denial of a motion to vacate his conviction based on new evidence of serious flaws in his original conviction. The day after hearing argument, the Appellate Court remanded his case with instructions for his immediate release based on its determination that his appeal “raises a substantial question of law or fact likely to result in a reversal or an order for a new trial." This victory is a testament to the power of justice and the impact of pro bono work, particularly through the dedication and perseverance of Saul Ewing LLP Brandon Clark and co-counsel Elizabeth R. Bacon JD, CIPP US, who have advocated for Jackson's innocence for nearly a decade.
