In celebration of World Architecture Day, we sat down with Gerardo “Lalo” Del Rosal to get his unique perspective on a standout building from his hometown of Mexico City – the Museo Soumaya. "The Museo Soumaya is one of those buildings that immediately captures your attention," Lalo shares. "Designed by Mexican architect Fernando Romero, it’s wrapped in these beautiful mirrored hexagons that create this ever-changing reflection of the city around it. The building’s fluid form, almost like a trapezoid in motion, makes it feel alive." The Museo Soumaya is a feat of engineering and design, with its twisted rhomboid shape supported by 28 curved steel columns of varying diameters and clad in over 16,000 mirrored hexagonal tiles. "Every time I visit, I’m drawn in by how dynamic it is – both in its shape and the way it interacts with its surroundings," Lalo continues. "It’s a must-visit when you're in Mexico City. To me, it's more than just a museum; it’s a symbol of modern Mexican architecture that beautifully merges tradition with innovation." It was an honor and privilege to participate in Canstruction Orange County 2024. Savely Healthcare Architects and NelsonHPS joined forces to create the "Minions of CANS to Annihilate Hunger" structure. While the competition and build were enjoyable, our primary focus was supporting the Orange County Food Bank and Community Action Partnership in their mission to combat hunger in our community. We are deeply humbled to have been chosen as the People's Choice award winner. Our entry, consisting of 2,354 cans, also earned the Best Use of Labels award, recognizing our design's exceptional representation of the image and colors we used. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who voted for us and to all team members who contributed their time and effort.
