We love highlighting up and coming talent right here at the University of Florida! If you have an exciting project around technology & innovation please let us know.
This #TechTuesday, we are back at the UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. Bethany Gaffey speaks with Nicole Kershner, the program manager of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Florida's Mechanical Design 3 course. They are delving into this semester’s project with the Astro Restoration Project. In the 1990s, the Astro Spacelab Missions had the largest payload, which included three telescopes, and return to Earth. The retired NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration scientists who built the telescopes, and are now a part of the Astro Restoration Project, are working to restore and put them into a museum. Students this semester were tasked with designing the documentation for a full-scale model able to hold an 8,000-pound telescope and ⅕ scales to replace the full-scale payload when it moves from the Huntsville Museum to the Smithsonian Institution. This type of capstone is the student’s first exposure to working in a “company setting.” Unlike other engineering courses, the projects in this course offer exposure to various engineering disciplines so students can’t turn to the back of a textbook to find a solution. They have to learn how to overcome the unforeseen issues.
