This #WomensEqualityDay, we celebrate the work our grantees lead to build a world in which women and all people have freedom and control over their bodies, equal political and economic power, and safety in all aspects of their lives. While Women’s Equality Day marks 104 years since the 19th Amendment granted white women the right to vote, the journey to full equality continues. For decades, women of color, including Black, Indigenous, Asian American and Latina women, have faced systemic barriers to political participation. Yet, research shows that when women are decision makers, communities are healthier, governments function more effectively, and businesses thrive. Coming days after Vice President Kamala Harris made history as the first woman of color to accept a major political party’s nomination for president, this year’s observance is especially powerful. Today, we honor the incredible progress made, the leaders and organizations that have fueled it and the work that remains ahead to achieve true equality.

Working to achieve more just and inclusive societies
About us
At Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, we partner with our grantees in the United States and Israel to pursue more just and inclusive societies. In the U.S., we aim to advance racial, gender and economic equity through investments in criminal justice, democracy and voting rights, K-12 public education, gender and reproductive equity and the family’s hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. We also invest in fostering a more joyful and diverse Jewish community. In Israel, we work toward a secure homeland for the Jewish people, a thriving democracy and an inclusive society that cares for its most vulnerable. Charles and Lynn Schusterman established the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation in 1987 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 2021, we updated our name to Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies to reflect the full range of the Schusterman family’s philanthropic and advocacy work. Under the leadership of Stacy Schusterman, we invest in leaders, organizations and U.S. public policy to drive long-term systemic change. Our team works with grantees, experts, civic institutions and governments to create pathways to greater equity and inclusion. Our work is inspired by our founders’ commitment to pursue justice, repair the world and ensure all people are treated with dignity and respect. Our team members bring a wide range of professional expertise, cultural backgrounds, lived experiences and perspectives to our work. The power of community violence intervention (CVI) is catching on across the U.S., with more cities stepping up to create safer neighborhoods. 🏘️ Organizations like The National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (NICJR) play an instrumental role in driving this change. By providing essential evidence and support, they help cities adopt effective public safety strategies like CVI, which engages directly with at-risk individuals to prevent violence. Explore how NICJR's findings helped transform Austin's approach to gun violence. #CVI #GunViolence #CriminalJusticeReform

With the election fast approaching, our grantees Repair the World and A More Perfect Union: The Jewish Partnership for Democracy are leading the charge to mobilize volunteers for civic duty. Their innovative tool, the Democracy Ballot, offers a menu of options to empower Jewish community members to take their first step into action, from poll-working to other forms of #civicengagement. Embodying our core values of justice (tzedek), repairing the world (tikkun olam), and treating all with dignity (derekh eretz), these grantees are working to ensure a fair and accessible voting process for all. Thank you, grantees!

Fill in the blank: The United States is one of ___ countries worldwide that does not guarantee paid family and medical leave. 🌏 This surprising fact was spotlighted in a petition led by our grantees, Paid Leave for All and MomsRising.org, in partnership with Glamour magazine. The petition garnered over 55,000 signatures and was delivered to Congress last month. Find the answer here: https://lnkd.in/eh-8Gh8q.

This innovative community violence intervention program is changing Baton Rouge. 💭 Devastated by gun violence in their neighborhoods, Baton Rouge residents pioneered intervention efforts to take matters into their own hands. By tracking interactions, mediating disputes and offering resources and support, they're empowering at-risk community members to choose a non-violent path. Read more about their efforts to build a safer future in a profile featuring The National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (NICJR) and leaders of our grantee, the Coalition to Advance Public Safety. #CriminalJustice #CommunityViolenceIntervention #SaferCommunities

I am proud to work for Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies every day, and especially proud on days when leaders like Lisa Eisen remind us that we can and we must reject the "either/or" premise we are told is the only option right now. "Ceding our spot at the table of humanity will not serve us, now or in the future. Our job as funders and practitioners is not to unravel the sacred bonds of our tribal and prophetic responsibilities, but rather to hold both. To choose both." https://lnkd.in/eYU8cbAw
