Chika made his discovery while solving a holiday assignment given by his teacher, Mary Ellis, the head of Mathematics at Westminster Under School. Given a book with divisibility tests for numbers 2 to 9, but none for 7, Chika devised a new formula. His formula involves taking the last digit of a number, multiplying it by 5, and adding it to the rest of the number. If the result is divisible by 7, so is the original number.
