Laura Brown’s entrepreneurial journey with Trove began in July 2021. With a diverse background in business, corporate marketing and community involvement, Laura founded Trove as a way to celebrate the craftsmanship of local artisans. But starting a new business during the challenges of the pandemic and navigating complex financial planning was not easy. That’s when Laura turned to SCORE. With guidance from her SCORE mentors, Laura developed a robust business plan, strengthened her financial strategy and launched a successful e-commerce site to expand her reach nationwide. During a two-year road construction project that disrupted local traffic, her mentors provided crucial support, helping her secure a grant to sustain the business through the downturn. Thanks to SCORE’s mentorship, Trove has continued to grow, representing over 65 local artisans, increasing sales year over year and gaining recognition as a Top 5 retail gift shop. Shakia Williams turned her passion for wine into a thriving business with Cyrenity Sips, a micro-winery and the first Black woman-owned wine tasting room. Starting in her garage in 2017, Shakia now produces hundreds of cases annually with her daughter Cyan serving as the tasting room manager.
