The average US consumer throws away approximately 81.5 pounds of clothes annually, leading to an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste in America alone. Textile production is the world’s second most polluting industry accounting for approximately 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Since 2021, our team has been on a mission to redesign the textile chain from linear to circular. So far, we’ve… - Diverted 100,000+ pounds of linen, clothes, towels away from landfills - Successfully collected from 800+ homes - Partnered with 10+ corporate customers

Since this article was published in 2023, SCRAP has seen a significant increase in collected textiles, soaring from 20,000 lbs to over 100,000 lbs and counting! This growth is proof that we're able to act as a bridge for other collectors, recyclers, manufacturers and consumers. An important process in this whole ecosystem of creating and establishing a true circular economy.

"What we are trying to do is change the way consumers, brands, manufacturers and retailers think about the role each plays in the ever changing ecosystem of textile manufacturing, consumption and eventual disposal. We are trying to get all of the key stakeholders to view the textile lifecycle as circular and not linear." In the hospitality industry, we recognize the significance of providing an exceptional stay for our guests, which includes ensuring the quality of linens and fabrics. Elements contributing to a lavish and cozy accommodation include textile-based items such as sheets, pillowcases, blankets, curtains, and cloth napkins. Unfortunately, these textiles eventually wear out, leading to frequent replacements and contributing to the pervasive issue of textile waste. Shockingly, only around 15% of textile waste is currently recycled, leaving the majority to end up in landfills or incinerators. This alarmingly low recycling rate underscores the urgent need for better waste management practices. In the absence of a proper system for textile waste collection, both the hospitality and fashion industries grapple with the challenge of dealing with the high costs associated with collection and storage. Addressing this issue requires a collective effort to establish effective textile waste management systems, minimizing the environmental impact while promoting sustainable practices in our industries. At SCRAP, we’re helping hotels contribute to a more sustainable and circular future.

Where do your items go? Items gathered through our collection process undergo meticulous sorting and processing by our recycling partners, Loftex Home - USA and Renewcell. Within this comprehensive system, a significant portion of clothing is either designated for reuse through donation or sale. These items find a second life, benefiting others or contributing to charitable causes. The recyclable items, on the other hand, are reintegrated into the production cycle as textiles for crafting new clothing. This sustainable approach minimizes waste and promotes a circular economy, where materials are repurposed to extend their lifespan. Even the smaller fraction of donations that may not be suitable for recycling don’t go to waste. Instead, these items are repurposed as stuffing or insulation, ensuring they serve a practical purpose rather than contributing to environmental harm. In our commitment to sustainability, we take pride in the fact that none of the clothing collected ends up in a landfill. By implementing these eco-friendly practices, we strive to make a positive impact on both the environment and communities in need.
