Renowned biologist and professor Jeffrey I. Gordon has been selected by Scripps Oceanography as the recipient of the 2024 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest! 🎉🔬 Often referred to as the “father of microbiome research,” Gordon leads transformative research that is furthering the understanding of human health and how it is shaped by the gut microbiome, or the collection of microbes that reside in the human gut. The public is invited to attend the Nierenberg award ceremony and presentation from Gordon in a free event on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Great Hall on the UC San Diego campus. Gordon’s presentation will discuss how he and other researchers are testing the hypothesis that childhood undernutrition is causally related to perturbations in the normal development of the gut microbiome. Childhood undernutrition is a devastating global health problem with long-term effects that remain resistant to current therapeutic interventions. Major milestone in climate education 🌎🌟 Starting this fall, UC San Diego is launching the Jane Teranes Climate Change Education Requirement (JTCCER), an initiative designed to ensure that undergraduates across all majors are equipped to understand and address climate change. This new graduation requirement is the first of its kind at a major public university and the first within the University of California system. Named in memory of the late Jane Teranes, a beloved teaching professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and advocate for climate education, the program honors her legacy by preparing the next generation of leaders to confront one of the world’s greatest challenges. To meet the JTCCER, all incoming first-year undergraduates will complete a one-quarter course from a list of more than 40 approved options, including 12 offered by Scripps Oceanography. With course titles spanning "California Politics," "Literature and the Environment," "Natural Disasters," and more, students can choose a class that fits their interests and major requirements—without adding to their overall workload. 📚 Learn more about this transformative initiative and how it’s shaping the future of climate education at UC San Diego: https://lnkd.in/g4s9Hfht #TritonPride #ClimateChange #HigherEd

Meet Steffaney Wood, a fifth-year PhD student at Scripps specializing in marine chemical biology. 🔬 Her research focuses on harmful algal blooms caused by Pseudo-nitzschia—a type of algae that produces a potent neurotoxin. These blooms can contaminate seafood, poison marine mammals, and threaten human health. “Fieldwork is always a pleasant reminder of why I love what I do, and during a toxic bloom, I'm reminded of how important research is,” said Steffaney.
