A tradition with roots dating back thousands of years, Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration to honor and remember deceased ancestors. San Diego State University’s International Student Center (ISC) will host two events on Friday, Nov. 1, to spotlight this rich Mexican cultural experience for the campus community. First is the Mexican Cultural Hour at noon in the ISC Lounge, where students will share food and a culture around Dia de los Muertos, created by the Aztecs long before the Spanish conquest. Today, Dia de los Muertos fuses Aztec rituals with elements of All Saints Day. The festivities will include coffee and Pan de muerto, a traditional sweet bread of the holiday. Next, the ISC will host a Dia de los Muertos Festival in the ISC Lounge from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm An altar, or ofrenda, has been adorned with photos, marigolds, candles and other symbolic items marking the journey of the deceased. Students are invited to bring photos of their loved ones to display on the altar during the day. Presentations will explain the Aztec rituals that underpin the celebration, as well as the elements of the altar and their significance. As a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, SDSU is proud to facilitate these unique cultural festivities that pay tribute to departed loved ones in a meaningful way. #SDSU #International #Dia de los Muertos, #Day of the Dead #Latinx #Culture

Check out SDSU Fulbright scholar Mele’ana Akolo, who recently was named a Fulbright-John Lewis Civil Rights Fellow. Only 28 of the 2,000 Fulbright Scholars nationwide received the fellowship, which honors Congressman Lewis, a giant of the civil rights movement. Early next year, Akolo will travel to Tonga to continue her research on gender disparities in treatment for women with substance use disorder, and what outreach methods are most effective in getting them help. I was honored to participate in the sixth annual ReBorder Conference held on campus this Tuesday, co-hosted by SDSU and Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) in collaboration with other U.S. and Mexican partners. This event brought together over 1,000 registered participants from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border and beyond. (https://lnkd.in/gcNxfhZY) This year’s theme, “Designing Oportunidades,” inspired by our region’s designation as the 2024 World Design Capital, sparked incredibly insightful discussions on the shared challenges and opportunities within our border community. I was particularly moved by the dedication of the attendees. I spoke with one student who woke up at 1 AM to catch the parade of buses bringing him and hundreds of others across the border to join this event. What dedication! I am proud to support this conference and look forward to putting the valuable insights gained into action as we continue to serve our students, partners, and broader transborder community. Massive kudos to Cristina Alfaro, Maria Keckler, Ph.D., and all the organizers, speakers, and participants for making this event such a success. Looking forward to next year! #reborder2024 #internationaleducation #sdsu SDSU Global Campus

The SDSU Latina Network has been supporting and serving the university’s Latinx community for 15 years, making it the perfect time to celebrate with a Quinceañera. At the organization’s Annual Luncheon on Friday, members and guests donned tiaras and colorful dresses to mark the anniversary of the organization’s founding in 2009. Decorative centerpieces enhanced the theme, bringing together more than 100 people at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center on campus during Hispanic Heritage Month. While the event was festive, it also served an important purpose. The luncheon is a fundraiser for the organization’s endowed scholarship, which aims to support students struggling to make ends meet. The Latina Network is composed of university faculty and staff. SDSU is a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution, with 35 percent of its student population of Latin heritage. A significant percentage of staff and faculty are Latinx as well. SDSU Lecturer Maria Arellano served as Master of Ceremonies. Dr. Cristina Alfaro, Associate Vice President of SDSU International Affairs, delivered the keynote address on overcoming adversity and taking pride in bilingualism and the culture of the Latinx community. Check out photos from the event. To join or learn more, contact the organization at sdsulatinanetwork@gmail.com. At SDSU, our mission is not simply to enroll international students, it's to serve them. One way we help new international students acclimate to a new culture and country is the International Student Center's Ambassador Program. Often, SDSU study abroad returnees volunteer to be ambassadors, which allows them to give back to the campus community by mentoring new international students. Check out their stories below. https://lnkd.in/gp7gUHsF
