🙌 Exciting news! Icebreaker Oden makes history as the first vessel to acquire marine scientific data in the uncharted Victoria Fjord in North Greenland. 🚢 The GEOEO North of Greenland 2024 Expedition, organized by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, set sail to assess how much and how fast the ice sheet in North Greenland can contribute to the global sea-level rise. Professor Martin Jakobsson, co-head of our Arctic and North Pacific Ocean Regional Center, is one of the two Chief Scientists aboard Oden. He is joined by his fellow center co-head, Professor Larry Mayer, a principal investigator focused on geophysical mapping. 💬 Seabed 2030 Project Director Jamie McMichael-Phillips celebrates this achievement: “Reaching and mapping these uncharted waters is a remarkable achievement that greatly supports our mission at Seabed 2030, and helps develop our understanding of the ocean". 🗺️ Meet Nautilus Live, a key partner helping to map the gaps. Their latest expedition aboard E/V Nautilus is a 10-day transit route from British Columbia to Hawaii and will contribute valuable data of uncharted seafloor that will form part of the GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans grid. We’re grateful to the expedition team for their ongoing efforts. Learn more about Nautilus’ technology 👉 https://lnkd.in/dmzYtG-X #MappingtheFuture #Ocean #Data #Expedition #Hydrospatial

🌊 Seabed 2030 at the 11th Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) in Pucón, Chile! 🇨🇱 We’re excited to share that Patrick Schwarzbach, Data Scientist at the Seabed 2030 Southern Ocean Regional Center, took part in this year's SCAR Open Science Conference. Held every two years, the SCAR Open Science Conference brings together hundreds of researchers and stakeholders from across the globe to share cutting-edge advancements and discuss critical issues related to Antarctica, including its role in the global climate system. This event plays a vital role in shaping the future of polar research and fostering international collaboration. During the conference, Patrick delivered a presentation on the International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean (IBCSO) - the most authoritative map of the Southern Ocean seafloor. With much of the Southern Ocean still unmapped, Patrick highlighted the importance of contributing bathymetric data. Every piece of data - whether from multibeam, singlebeam, lead line, or topographic surveys - plays a vital role in enhancing our understanding of the seafloor. These contributions are essential for developing the next version of IBCSO and the annual update of the GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans grid. Together, we can map the gaps. 🙌 This is what progress looks like. Since 2014 the GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans Global Map has acquired incredible new data points thanks to collaborative global efforts to unlock archived data, make existing data points publicly available, and map uncharted areas. ⛴️ This visual shows just one small section of wider efforts to map the entire seafloor by 2030.
