At Sealaska, we’re invested in Indigenous languages, ensuring the growth of our mother tongues for future generations. Here’s a glimpse into the impact of one of our current language grant recipients. At the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC), language teachers Ahl’lidaaw Gitackangeak, Shuguyna Donna May Roberts and Miquel Dangeli have been inspiring learners of the Tsimshian dialect Sm’algyax through methods including Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS). In TPRS, teachers use storytelling to engage students, emphasizing comprehension and verbal ability over traditional grammar and vocabulary skills. Highlights from this year include seasonal classes to provide a thematic approach to language learning, translating “Flora Wants Seaweed” and other stories to Sm’algyax, developing PDF resources, delivering presentations and assisting with the 6th International Tlingit Spelling Bee. Thank you to the KIC team for their important work! Sealaska’s $10 million language revitalization endowment, approved by the Board of Directors in 2019, funds these grants—$500,000 annually—to preserve Southeast Alaska’s languages.
