About us
For nearly 50 years, SEARHC has provided high-quality healthcare services to the residents of Southeast Alaska. Operating as an independent and nonprofit health Consortium, SEARHC provides a comprehensive range of health-related services, including primary, urgent and specialty medical care, dental services, behavioral health support, wellness programs, optometry services and more. We are dedicated to improving the health, well-being and quality of life for all people in these communities. SEARHC is committed to keeping care closer to home and making advanced medical technologies accessible to all. One of the many ways SEARHC does this is by offering specialty clinics or sending medical specialists to remote communities and facilities to care for patients who cannot travel. Established in 1975, SEARHC is one of the largest Native-run health organizations in the United States. In 1976, SEARHC contracted with the Indian Health Service under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act to assume management of the Community Health Aide Program. Today, SEARHC has more than 1,700 employees and operates in 27 communities throughout Southeast Alaska, including two Critical Access Hospitals.

We are proud to honor the legacy of Ethel Lund through the Village Health Occupations Program (VHOP). The VHOP program returned this past July following a hiatus resulting from the COVID pandemic. VHOP is a week-long program held at the Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center (MEMC) campus in Sitka for rising high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing careers in healthcare. Healthcare makes up one of the largest economic sectors in Alaska, accounting for 12 percent of the state’s total workforce. Unfortunately, Alaska Natives make up a very small portion of this percentage – just 1 percent of all medical students and just 0.5 percent of nursing students. The SEARHC VHOP program is designed to help increase the number of Alaska Native and American Indian students pursuing health careers in Southeast Alaska. This year’s cohort of students hailing from Anchorage, Juneau and Sitka spent their week job shadowing across SEARHC departments at MEMC. In addition to the skills labs with hands-on experiences, VHOP students received training and certifications in Bloodborne Pathogens and First Aid. Each lunch period, SEARHC invited local Elders to join the students and share cultural knowledge and life lessons. In the evening, the students spent invaluable time with Pauline Duncan, an Elder from the Sitka Tribes of Alaska, who taught them traditional Tlingit practices such as the process of breaking down and drying fish in a smokehouse. The students have career aspirations in surgical rotations, nursing, physical rehabilitation and veterinary services. SEARHC is proud to support these students as they continue to walk down these new and innovative pathways of learning. Do you know of or are you a junior or senior student interested in exploring a healthcare-related career? Let us know in the comments and we’ll DM you how to get on our contact list for the 2025 program.
