With more K-12 schools adopting cell phone bans, what does this mean for EdTech? 📱🚫 While these policies are often met with mixed reactions—parents are divided, but teachers largely support them—it doesn’t mean mobile-friendly EdTech is becoming obsolete. In most cases, these bans are really just restrictions during instructional time, with teachers able to authorize phone use for educational purposes. So, tools like virtual reality experiences designed for smartphones will not be made obsolete by these sorts of bans nor will they necessitate additional costly technology. But there’s another critical factor: mobile accessibility is essential for equitable learning. As many as 15% of Americans are mobile-phone dependent for internet access, including a disproportionate number of Black and Hispanic families, and 28% of households earning less than $30K annually (Pew Research: https://buff.ly/4dSR1tq). In homes with limited broadband access or only one computer shared by many, having mobile-friendly EdTech ensures students can still complete their assignments. For EdTech companies, this means designing solutions that meet students and teachers where they are—both in the classroom and at home. 📲✨ #EdTech #K12Education #MobileAccessibility #EquityInEducation #CivicEducation #eLearning

Did you know that virtual and augmented reality in education has roots dating back over a century? 🎓🔍 Before AR/VR headsets, there were stereoscopes—goggles that gave users a 3D view of images, not unlike today's immersive tech. One of the pioneers in this space was the Keystone View Company, which launched its educational department in 1905, supplying U.S. schools with stereoscopes and educational slides for subjects like geography, science, history, and more. Take a look at this 1919 stereogram from their collection (🔗https://buff.ly/4dMYz0U ) showing WWI soldiers gathering their fallen comrades—perhaps more interesting for its ability to offer a peak into what was being taught in classroom's in the 1920's than for its actual content. This stereogram is just one of the many primary sources featured in Second Avenue Learning’s Election Edge, bringing history to life for today’s learners. 🌍📚 #EdTech #ImmersiveLearning #VirtualReality #AugmentedReality #PrimarySources #education #socialstudies #ushistory

"With class time precious, you might still be hesitating. But consider the words of Horace Mann, often called the father of American public education: 'Education is our only political safety. Outside of this ark, all is deluge.'" — Web Hutchins for EdWeek: https://buff.ly/3ZZ9pxt As Hutchins—a veteran social studies teacher—points out, the 2023 Harvard Youth Poll found that a majority of young Americans didn’t feel their high school education prepared them for the practical aspects of voting. What strategies is your district using to close this gap? Share in the comments how you’re preparing the next generation to be informed, engaged citizens during this #VoterEducationWeek. #CivicEducation #VoterEducation #2024Election #CivicEngagement

🚨 The countdown is on: just 4 weeks until the 2024 Presidential Election! 🚨 With increasing political polarization and unprecedented events, it’s a crucial time for educators to deliver impactful non-partisan civics education. According to the Institute for Citizens & Scholars’ (ICS) 2023 survey (🔗 https://buff.ly/4fdZpoD ) students who demonstrate strong knowledge of U.S. civics and current events are not only more likely to engage in civic life, but also more likely to reject political violence. So, how can we support educators in this mission? CivxNow, a coalition dedicated to making civics education a national priority, recommends combining direct civics instruction with practices like: 🗨️ Viewpoint-diverse classroom discussions 🔬 Project-based learning 🗳️ Simulations of democratic processes At Second Avenue Learning, we’re addressing these needs with Election Edge, offering comprehensive lesson plans, discussion prompts, project ideas, and our “Run Your Own Election” feature. We’re excited to empower teachers and help foster the next generation of informed, engaged citizens.
