After 25 years with the same company and 30 years as a mechanical engineer in Silicon Valley, 53-year-old Garrett was suddenly laid off, leaving him overwhelmed with anxiety about how to support his wife, son, and daughter. “Quarter-century employed, and suddenly, BOOM, I’m out of work. I hadn’t written a resume in 25 years.” Finding Second Harvest’s free grocery distribution at Cañada College was Garrett's lifeline. His grocery bills dropped to a quarter of what they once were, giving him the breathing room to focus on getting back on his feet. “The stress of unemployment was brutal...but this free food distribution was like level ground. It was one of the relaxers every week.” Though he’s now reemployed, Garrett occasionally visits the distribution to help manage his budget. “There’s just something so fundamentally soothing about knowing I can put food on the table.” #50YearsofNourishment

Second Harvest's mission is to end hunger in our community.
About us
Founded in 1974, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is one of the largest food banks in the nation and a trusted nonprofit leader in ending local hunger. The organization distributes nutritious groceries through a network of nearly 400 partners at drive-thru and walk-up sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Due to the prohibitively expensive cost of living in Silicon Valley, the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rise in inflation, Second Harvest is now serving an average of about 500,000 people every month. Second Harvest also connects people to federal nutrition programs and other food resources, and advocates for anti-hunger policies on the local, state and national levels. “Even as people have been able to go back to work, the cost of living in our area and the income inequality still makes it very hard for people to get by, so our services are helping people be able to pay their rent.” - Tracy Weatherby, Vice President of Strategy and Advocacy at Second Harvest via San Jose Spotlight https://lnkd.in/gtqzjyQk

🏈 Soup-er excited to kick off the holiday season with Campbell's Chunky and San Francisco 49ers legend Trent Williams and his mom! 🥫🍽️ Together, they helped us pack cans and bowls of Campbell’s Chunky soup as part of Campbell’s commitment to the fight against hunger. Today’s donation is just a portion of what’s to come—throughout the NFL season, for every sack on the field, Campbell’s Chunky will donate 1,000 meals, up to 2 million meals, to help us tackle food insecurity across the Bay Area. #FeedingSiliconValley

In September 1974, a group of resourceful community members saw a need: while thousands of neighbors were hungry , local growers were throwing away millions of pounds of fresh produce. True to Silicon Valley’s innovative spirit 💡, these early food bankers redirected that food to those in need by founding what is now Second Harvest of Silicon Valley — in a strip garage. Fifty years later, thanks to supporters like you , Second Harvest has scaled to meet our community’s growing need through countless challenges. 🌎🍽️ On International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, we’re celebrating our Grocery Rescue Program's growth—doubling donations in two years! Thanks to a $1M Feeding America grant, we’ve provided 9 refrigerated vans, 14 cold storage units, and more to support our partner agencies. This investment helps us reduce food waste and nourish more people while fostering stronger community partnerships. Together, we’re making an impact—one rescued meal at a time. 🍎🚛 #EndFoodWaste.

📅 Did you know? Back in September 1974, we drafted our first job description for the Director of the Food Bank Program, a key part of the ESO Division of Aging and Emergency Services. Our goals were clear: 1️⃣ Equip our food warehousing and distribution facility for efficiency. 2️⃣ Establish fair, regulated procedures for our food banking system. 3️⃣ Maximize food distribution with our limited resources. And on September 1, 1974, we leased our very first 1,500 sq. ft. warehouse facility. Here's to the roots of our journey in ending hunger! 🚚🍽️ #FlashBackFriday #FoodBankHistory #50YearsofInnovation
