🍎Volunteers Fuel Our Hunger Relief here at Second Harvest Heartland🍎 So much of our food bank operations rely on the time, talents and generosity of volunteers. From food sorting and packing to client assistance and skill-based projects, volunteers serve side-by-side with our employees as we work together to end hunger. Join in to help our community! These volunteers are packing rice that goes out to our partners in sizes that work better for them. The hair nets are a bonus to working on a project like this!

About us
Second Harvest Heartland is a leading hunger-relief organization. In partnership with more than 1,100 food shelves and hunger-relief programs in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, we provided nearly 128 million meals to neighbors last year. We also help families enroll in food assistance and provide prepared meals for people who need more than groceries. Second Harvest Heartland is a leader, convener and voice in hunger-related policy discussions. We’re working on a bold goal to cut hunger in half for all Minnesotans by 2030. With the help of the whole community, we’ll reduce hunger today by increasing access to emergency food, and prevent hunger tomorrow with policy, partnerships and one-on-one services, all while tracking progress to ensure we’re effective and accountable. There’s a role for each of us to play in making hunger history. Reach out to learn how you can join us or learn more at 2harvest.org. Everything is made by scratch. Even the mayo. Yes, mayo. The students at Saint Paul College-A Community and Technical College are artists with food who make meals for those who need them with the Kitchen Coalition in partnership with their program. The future culinary leaders are doing good by learning. Seeing the joy that comes from not just preparing food but having the knowledge that what they create in the classroom is making a valuable difference in their community. It is a nourishing endeavor and a collaborative effort that demonstrates that what is learned in the Saint Paul College classroom has an immediate and important impact as we seek to keep our neighbors fed and end hunger for good. https://bit.ly/4facijY

“We're out there all the time looking for different opportunities and partnerships to increase protein,” Lindsey continues. “It's one of the most expensive items that our neighbors have to put on their plates and knowing therefore that it's one of the most in demand [items] at our partners.” Since our fiscal year started in October, we’ve sourced over 1M pounds of protein and distributed almost 20% more protein to date than last year.

We are so proud of our partner Calvary Lutheran Church who have been innovating and changing as needs in their community have changed. They have housed a small food shelf for more than 40 years, but when the pandemic and events following the murder of George Floyd brought heightened need to the area, Calvary expanded their food support. https://bit.ly/3xU9abj

You already know our team is full of amazing people who care for our neighbors. Now, they are quicker than before - making sure orders get out to our partners in a method that's safe and orderly. By using process mapping and optimizing our food storage strategies, Second Harvest Heartland's warehouse teams are assembling food shelf partner's orders faster and getting 20% more pounds of food out the door each day. We have also cross trained our warehouse staff to increase flexibility and maximize the power of the team to keep up with record demand. #FoodStorage #ProcessMapping #Warehouse #MakeHungerHistory #FoodBank

We’re making progress on a bold goal: cutting hunger in half for all Minnesotans by 2030. Partnerships and food streams allowed us to bring in more food to help meet the increasing needs of our neighbors. Significant adjustments to Second Harvest Heartland’s operations and sourcing methods are already in place, but there are many more pieces to the puzzle. Keep following along with us! #MakeHungerHistory #FoodStreams #FoodBanking #Hunger

“As we work to Make Hunger History, a big piece of my role is to transform our supply chain to ensure that we can continue to deliver against the growing need in Minnesota,” says Senior Director of Supply Chain Toni Scott We hit the ground running this spring on our first pillar of Make Hunger History—getting more of the right food, right where it’s needed. We’re improving our food sourcing and operations in various ways to make that happen. “There's a lot of different partnerships and a lot of different ways that food makes its way here,” explains Director of Sourcing and Demand Planning Lindsey Ochmanek. “We need to be really thoughtful about making sure that we are meeting the needs of our neighbors.” https://bit.ly/4c9zJs2 #FoodSourcing #FoodBanking #SupplyChain #MakeHungerHistory
