Slalom, a consulting firm in Minneapolis, has partnered with Second Harvest Heartland for the last 11 years on an annual fund-and-volunteer drive. This year, employees raised $19,695 and volunteered 42 hours! Their team also worked with Second Harvest Heartland for the first time to coordinate give-back days with local restaurants that donated a portion of their sales to Second Harvest Heartland. Slalom’s work with Second Harvest Heartland doesn’t end there. The firm also offers pro-bono consulting services to the food bank. Their latest project involves process mapping the Second Harvest Heartland volunteer center experience, looking for ways to make our work more efficient while maintaining a great experience for volunteers and staff.

About us
Second Harvest Heartland is a leading hunger-relief organization. In partnership with more than 1,100 food shelves and hunger-relief programs in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, we provided nearly 128 million meals to neighbors last year. We also help families enroll in food assistance and provide prepared meals for people who need more than groceries. Second Harvest Heartland is a leader, convener and voice in hunger-related policy discussions. We’re working on a bold goal to cut hunger in half for all Minnesotans by 2030. With the help of the whole community, we’ll reduce hunger today by increasing access to emergency food, and prevent hunger tomorrow with policy, partnerships and one-on-one services, all while tracking progress to ensure we’re effective and accountable. There’s a role for each of us to play in making hunger history. Reach out to learn how you can join us or learn more at 2harvest.org. As a large produce buyer, we strengthen our agricultural community and address the racial wealth gap by intentionally purchasing from emerging farmers. This year, we are collaborating with three organizations to purchase food from farms owned and run by small-scale and emerging farmers. One of these organizations will be The Minnesota African Immigrant Farmers Association (MAIFA), a nonprofit association devoted to the growth and development of the African farming community in Minnesota. MAIFA works with small scale farm operations that will deliver produce directly to seven Second Harvest Heartland food shelf partners. We’ll be investing $60,000 in this new partnership which will allow us to source culturally connected produce varieties that we can’t get anywhere else.

Since 2018, we have doubled the number of pounds of food through our warehouse, and in the past couple of years, we've seen a 15% increase each year. It takes more people, more equipment, more of everything to meet that demand. That's why we've been adjustments to our operations and sourcing methods - to get us closer to our goal to cut hunger in half by 2030. There are many more pieces to the puzzle but increasing our pick rate by 20% and protein sourcing by 20% is progress that makes a direct impact for our neighbors. #FoodBanking #FoodInsecurity #Sourcing #PickRate

Thank you to our Hunger Action Month sponsors Delta Air Lines and Dairy Queen for joining us in the movement to end hunger. Together, with sponsor matching funds and the generosity of our community, we raised enough to provide over 1.7 million nourishing meals for our neighbors.
