  • Muswellbrook SC has really shown that it is possible to draw the line and require positive action. Can’t wait to see the others putting out their statements soon. We also see the growing number of councils requesting info on their projected PV waste issue, and we love working together to turn that into sustainable outcome.

Muswellbrook Leads the Charge on Solar Waste—Will the Industry Follow? Muswellbrook Shire Council is setting the standard for responsible solar development. Their latest move? A recycling mandate for the proposed 135 MW Muswellbrook solar farm (MSF) in New South Wales being developed by OX2 in partnership with Idemitsu Australia Pty Ltd., ensuring that an estimated 30,000 defective or damaged panels from this development don’t end up in landfill. 👏 This is the kind of leadership we need in the renewable energy sector. Because let’s be honest—solar is only sustainable if it’s circular. The hard truth? Many solar farms burden local community waste facilities operated by local councils with waste from broken panels, discarded pallets, and premature system upgrades. And as local communities, councils, and regulators push for higher standards, ignoring these issues is a risk to project approvals and social licence. At Second Life Solar, we help solar farms turn their waste problem into a circular economy opportunity. Our solutions include: ✅ Waste management planning and circular economy strategies ✅ Reverse logistics for recycling (via our recycling partner network) and reuse strategies aligned with ISO59020:2024 ✅ Repowering with reuse—keeping functional panels in service ✅ Waste management and circular economy solutions to cut costs and improve community trust 💡 Solar farms can’t afford to wait. The future is circular, and Muswellbrook is proving that if solar farm developers aren't proactive about circular waste solutions then leaders like Muswellbrook Council will impose conditions on developments. 🔗 Read about Muswellbrook Shire Council’s bold stance: https://lnkd.in/gm3d8nXg 👉 If you're a solar farm developer and want to get ahead of the curve, let's talk. #CircularEconomy #SolarWaste #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability

  • Thanks for the post James, it's a message of concern I'm hearing from the waste management teams and the sustainability teams in councils across Australia

  • Santa's helpers busy at the North Pole .... no wait , our mistake, that is the team testing the first pallet load of solar panels for the day at Pan Pacific Recycling near Brisbane as part of the Queensland Government's PV Stewardship pilot project being led by Smart Energy Council. 39 out of 40 panels from this pallet were fully functional (the one that failed still worked but the glass was smashed in one corner). The team are testing for the electrical performance of the panels (are they producing the amount of power they should be) and also the mechanical condition of the panels (eg looking for cracked cells, degradation, physical damage). Not all batches will have such a high pass rate but goes to show that many fully functional panels are being discarded unnecessarily and why Australia has an opportunity to activate a reuse market for PV panels if we want a fully circular solar industry. Enjoy your Christmas and if you are struggling to think of something for Santa to bring you in 2025 maybe think about a circular solar solution. Get in touch with Santa's helpers to find out how we can help. • Solar farms are a cornerstone of meeting net zero targets, but growing concerns about waste and sustainability are putting their social licence to operate (SLO) at risk. Issues such as mountains of discarded pallets, broken solar panels, and premature system upgrades are leading to negative sentiment and media coverage, making approvals and operations harder. At Second Life Solar, we specialise in circular economy solutions tailored to solar farms. Our services address the entire lifecycle of your solar operations, helping you meet sustainability goals, maintain your social licence, and operate efficiently. #circulareconomy #netzero #solar #solarfarm https://lnkd.in/gXn_mxsP

  • Did you know? By 2033, Australia will have accumulated 1 million tonnes of solar panel waste—enough to circle the Earth three times. Without a plan for end-of-life management, your solar systems could become part of this growing problem, undermining the very sustainability goals they were installed to achieve.
