The newly expanded Portland International Airport (PDX) main terminal isn’t just a transit hub—it’s a transportive experience rooted in the Pacific Northwest. Led by ZGF Architects, this landmark expansion seamlessly merges the region’s natural heritage with forward-thinking, sustainable design. 🌲 A Forest Within the Terminal At its heart is a stunning 9-acre mass timber roof crafted from locally sourced wood within a 300-mile radius—a tribute to Oregon’s forestry innovation. Beneath it, 72 towering trees and over 5,000 native plants bring the outside in, immersing travelers in a biophilic environment that feels calm, intuitive, and unmistakably Portland. 🛤 Wayfinding Meets Placemaking Minimal signage, natural light, and thoughtful circulation patterns, combined with locally inspired graphics and materials, ensure effortless navigation. This integration of wayfinding and placemaking transforms the terminal into a living reflection of the region’s identity. 🎤 Join Us in Las Vegas! Want to hear more about the design process? On April 23, at 2025 SEGD Wayfinding + Placemaking at the ISA International Sign Expo in Las Vegas, you’ll hear directly from project designers Sara Schmidt (Sara Schmidt Design, LLC) and Kathy Fry (Mayer/Reed) as they share how the orchestration of mass timber, light, local art, greenery, wayfinding, and the iconic PDX carpet creates a “uniquely PDX” travel experience. 🔗 Read the case study: https://lnkd.in/gPnvEz77 ✈️ Join the conversation in Las Vegas: https://lnkd.in/gkAn8Jf2 _____ Project Credits: Client: Port of Portland Architect & Interior Design: ZGF Architects Experiential Graphic Design: Sara Schmidt Design, LLC Wayfinding Design: HOK (Masterplan), Mayer/Reed, Inc. We’re so grateful for the incredible women in design who are breaking barriers, shaping the future, and paving the way for others to rise. 💜 This Women’s History Month, SEGD CEO Cybelle Jones shares a powerful reflection on the mentors and experiences that shaped her career—along with a call to action for all of us to elevate, support, and acknowledge the women who have made a difference in our lives. Who inspired you? Who have you mentored? Who needs to hear that they belong? Now is the time to reach out, show up, and give back. This is a must-read, must-share piece for anyone who believes in the power of mentorship and community. Let’s continue lifting each other up. 🙌 See more below... #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenInDesign #Mentorship #Leadership #SEGD #DesignersofExperiences
💡 Women in Design: Who helped shape your career? Who have you mentored? Throughout my journey—from art school dreams to leading teams in experiential design and at SEGD—I’ve been shaped by incredible mentors. Some pushed me, some believed in me before I believed in myself, and some showed me what leadership truly looks like. Their lessons still guide me today: 🔥 Own your talent and identity – Creativity isn’t about perfection; it’s about being bold enough to try, adapt, and keep going. ⚡ Commit to the process – Design is exploration, iteration, and resilience. Sometimes, the best way to accomplish something is to be “totally unqualified” for the job (Paula Scher was right!). 🙌 Bring others with you – If you have a seat at the table, make room for more. The strongest teams are built by uplifting others. 🌍 Build a stronger community – SEGD has shown me that when we lift others up, we all rise. The best ideas don’t come from competition; they come from collaboration. 💙 Reach out, show up, and give back – Mentorship doesn’t have to be formal. It can be a moment of encouragement, a shared opportunity, or simply telling someone, “You belong here.” This Women’s History Month, I want to celebrate the mentors who shaped me and pay it forward. Tag a woman who has mentored you—or someone you’ve mentored—and share how they’ve made an impact. Let’s amplify the voices that push our industry forward! A shout out to a few of the women that support our community, I am sure to miss some... Design is more than aesthetics—it’s an opportunity to shape a better, more sustainable future. This year, SEGD is proud to introduce two new honors within the Global Design Awards, recognizing projects that lead the way in sustainable and life-centered design: 🏆 Sustainability Impact Recognition – Celebrating projects that integrate circular materials, regenerative processes, and sustainability-driven storytelling to create meaningful change. 🏆 Life-Centered Design Award – Honoring work that moves beyond human-centered design to embrace a holistic, systems-based approach where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. "We are looking to inspire more creative, open, and regenerative approaches to design—ones that move beyond initial metrics and truly work in harmony with life." – Genell Zuciya, SEGD Sustainability Committee Chair "Our design community has the capacity to make sustainability not just a consideration, but the foundation of our work. The new sustainability categories in the Global Design Awards go beyond recognition—they spark a movement." – Joel Krieger, SEGD Sustainability Committee Co-Chair ⏰ The deadline to submit before the late fee is TOMORROW, February 28! Don’t miss this chance to showcase your work and be part of the movement toward a regenerative design future. Winning a SEGD Global Design Award isn’t just recognition—it’s a strategic advantage. From press coverage and speaking opportunities to new business leads and talent attraction, the impact extends far beyond the win. Our Director of Marketing, Kristin Bennani, shares insights from both sides of the process—running the SEGD awards as staff to crafting winning submissions for firms—to explain why awards should be a key part of your business strategy. The final deadline to submit is March 15—don’t miss out! Submit your projects here: https://lnkd.in/db6ZeVgR
We've been talking a lot about the value of awards as a business investment, and it got me thinking—I have a lot of thoughts on this. From being a fly on the wall during jury deliberations at the SEGD Global Design Awards to writing winning submissions for designers, I’ve seen firsthand how effective awards can be as a marketing tool. My (not-so-secret) secret: Awards are central to a design firm's strategic marketing plan. Why? Because if you win: ✅ You get published ✅ You get invited to speak ✅ You get a seat at the table ✅ You get hired ✅ You attract top talent And that’s just the beginning. Winning awards has an undeniable ROI—it’s one of the fastest, most cost-effective ways to build reputation, gain visibility, and open new doors. I wrote more about why I love awards (and why they should be part of your strategy) here...
