About us
Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) was established in 1981, by Tony Hopson, Sr., a lifelong North Portland resident and community leader. It began as a one-week summer basketball camp aimed at providing a positive alternative for African American teens living in an area of Portland that was leaving them behind. By 1989, SEI had grown into a year-round program providing academic support and comprehensive wraparound services for African American students and their families. In 1997, SEI opened the Center for Self Enhancement, which continues to serve as a safe haven for thousands of children and is the hub of SEI’s work. SEI has remained a pillar in the North Portland community and continues to expand its programs to provide youth and families with a continuum of services. Today, SEI is a comprehensive, one-stop resource for youth and families, primarily African Americans and others living in poverty or seeking culturally responsive services. It is also one of the city’s leading multi-service organizations, providing thousands of youth, families, and adults with a wide array of education and social services on an annual basis. SEI’s strength is in its ability to meet the complex needs of the children and families it serves, including helping people to overcome cultural, educational and economic barriers. SEI is committed to helping youth and families realize their full potential. SEI believes that every child has a gift and that it is our shared responsibility to help every child find that gift. By expanding learning opportunities and teaching every child that “Life Has Options,” SEI is seeing amazing results proving that SEI is the solution.

Yesterday, we celebrated the naming dedication and opening of the Dr. Darrell Millner Building, a new affordable housing development in North Portland’s Overlook neighborhood. Named in honor of Dr. Darrell Millner, a pioneering scholar who championed the history of Black Oregonians, this new community is part of the Alberta Alive initiative—a partnership between Community Development Partners and Self Enhancement, Inc. The speaking program featured Dr. Darrell Millner and his family, Trent Aldridge, Tony Hopson, Sr., Sharita Towne, Councilor Mary Nolan, Commissioner Carmen Caballero Rubio, and Dr. Steven Holt. The Millner Building provides 63 affordable apartments, prioritizing those with generational ties to N/NE Portland, an area significantly impacted by urban renewal and gentrification. Offering a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, the building supports households earning up to 60% of the area median income. Residents will also benefit from services and programming provided by Self Enhancement, Inc., as well as amenities such as ground-floor commercial space, a community garden, and a play area. The building was designed by Carleton Hart Architecture PC and built by LMC Construction. This development is one of several Alberta Alive projects working to create long-term stability, opportunity, and a thriving Black community in Portland. Together, CDP and SEI are building a network of five affordable housing communities that address diverse housing needs in the historical heart of Portland’s Black population. Thank you to all of our partners: Oregon Housing & Community Services (OHCS), Metro, Portland Housing Bureau, #NorthNortheastNeighborhoodHousingStrategy #aBlackEcologyofPortland, Dwell Realty, The Oregon Community Foundation, Earth Advantage, KeyBank, Citi, R4 Capital LLC, Guardian Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/gN2eMu6b

A new beginning for the Strong Family Property is underway! The COLAS Team remains ever so proud to serve as the GC for this Alberta Alive project with Self Enhancement, Inc., Community Development Partners, and Holst! #buildingtomorrowtoday
We're thrilled to announce the closing of the latest Alberta Alive project! The Strong Property site is the third phase of the Alberta Alive vision, a partnership between Self Enhancement, Inc. and Community Development Partners with the shared goal of providing accessible, affordable housing to low-income African American families in North/Northeast Portland. Alberta Alive is dedicated to celebrating and strengthening Portland's historically Black N/NE neighborhoods, which have suffered the harmful impacts of urban renewal. Located at the prominent intersection of N Alberta and N Williams Avenue, the development will provide 75 brand-new apartments, all of which will adhere to the City’s N/NE Preference Policy, ensuring equitable access to housing opportunities. The project was designed by Holst Architecture and is being built by Colas Construction Co. A big thank you to all of our partners for making this vision a reality. We can't wait to see this new community come to life!

And just like that we back at it! First day for all grade levels here at Grant High School in the books and I couldn't be more excited to head into my third school year with Self Enhancement, Inc. It was an honor to welcome my freshmen to high school, and humbling to reconnect with my juniors after a long summer (who are now under the impression that since they are upperclassmen they can bully me). Good luck to my fellow coordinators, mentors, and educators as we get this school year started 📚✏️

Thanks to Washington Trust Bank for dedicating their 2024 School Supply Drive to supporting Self Enhancement, Inc. students. We're incredibly grateful to Tien Nguyen for his leadership and Wendy Yuvienco for visiting the Tony Hopson, Sr. Center for Self Enhancement. Together with their Crew in Blue team and contributions from their commercial, private banking, wealth management, and compliance teams, we're setting SEI students and families up to realize their full potential this school year!
