SIA was pleased to attend and speak at the third U.S-Mexico Semiconductor Collaboration Forum, hosted by #CANIETI2024 in Ciudad Juárez. SIA Director of Technology Policy Erik Hadland, PhD presented two of SIA’s most recent reports—Emerging Resilience in the Semiconductor Supply Chain and Attracting Chips Investments: Industry Recommendations for Policy Makers—to the group as they draft a master plan and national strategy to guide Mexico’s efforts to develop the #semiconductor supply chain in Mexico. SIA congratulates government and industry representatives on a successful meeting, which aimed to understand the needs and perspectives of semiconductor companies considering investments in Mexico to complement U.S. #CHIPSAct investments. Increasing capacity in new countries is critical for a successful and resilient semiconductor industry, and this gathering was an excellent step toward realizing that goal. Special thanks to CANIETI (Alfredo Pacheco), the Gobierno del Estado de Chihuahua, and the U.S. Embassy in Mexico for organizing the meeting. Additional thanks to our member companies from Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (Josep Marce), Intel Corporation (Santiago Cardona), Synopsys Inc (Victor Grimblatt, PhD), and Infineon Technologies (Ariel Abam) for bringing their insights to the group. And as always, terrific to see our partners from ITSI (Richard J. Román, Jesús Silva Elizalde), who are partners in the effort to rebalance semiconductor supply chains. SIA applauds today’s announced #CHIPSAct incentives for Wolfspeed, which will support the construction of a new silicon carbide wafer manufacturing facility in North Carolina and the expansion of an existing facility in New York. Silicon carbide wafers offer significant energy efficiency and durability advantages, and they are used in a range of technologies including EVs, renewable energy facilities, national security systems, AI, and more. We applaud Wolfspeed for their continued investments in U.S. #semiconductor manufacturing, and we salute the U.S. Department of Commerce for continuing to diligently advance CHIPS incentives. Read our full statement here: https://lnkd.in/dWrRvxDf
We’re excited to announce that we have reached a preliminary agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce for up to $750M in proposed direct funding under the U.S. CHIPS Act, as well as an incremental investment of $750M led by Apollo Global Management, Inc., The Baupost Group and Fidelity Investments. We also expect to receive approximately $1B in cash tax refunds from 48D over the next several years. In total, this additional $2.5B in liquidity will help ensure a clear path to profitability while maintaining critical investments in our next-generation 200mm technology. Wolfspeed’s silicon carbide technology is a critical material component for technological leadership in the U.S. as well as for national security interests, and we are poised to deliver at a scale that’s never been seen before in the semiconductor industry. We are committed to the electrification of everything from EV powertrains, e-mobility, renewable energy systems, battery energy storage systems, AI data centers and beyond. Our momentum is stronger than ever as we press forward in our insatiable pursuit to power the world’s most disruptive innovations today, not tomorrow. Today’s announced #CHIPSAct incentives for Edwards Vacuum will support the construction of a new manufacturing facility in New York. This facility will produce state-of-the-art dry vacuum pumps, which are needed for #semiconductor manufacturing, and create roughly 600 high-quality jobs. We commend Edwards Vacuum for investing in American manufacturing, and applaud the U.S. Department of Commerce for working diligently to ensure U.S. supply chain security.
Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce and Edwards Vacuum have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms to provide up to $18 million in proposed direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act.

SIA applauds enactment of the bipartisan Building Chips in America Act, which was passed by Congress with strong, bipartisan support and signed into law yesterday by President Biden. The Building Chips in America Act will help ensure new #semiconductor facilities incentivized by the landmark CHIPS and Science Act get up and running in an expeditious and environmentally responsible way. We commend the leadership of the bill’s champions in Congress – including lead sponsors Sens. Mark Kelly, Ted Cruz, Bill Hagerty, Todd Young, and Sherrod Brown in the Senate and Reps. Jen Kiggans, Scott Peters, Brandon Williams, Colin Allred, and Michael McCaul in the House. And we look forward to continuing to work with government leaders to ensure the #CHIPSAct delivers maximum benefits to America’s economy, national security, and global competitiveness.
