It's surprising (or maybe not so much) to see China-linked Volt Typhoon using basic attack methods like phishing and default password exploitation on our critical infrastructure. When we think about sectors like energy and water, which are crucial to national security, we expect advanced, enterprise-grade hacking at play. This article sheds light on the concerning findings from CISA and the Coast Guard, revealing how Volt Typhoon is compromising networks across multiple sectors. It also highlights that systems we might not usually associate with national security—such as water and transportation—are now vulnerable as they become remotely accessible to threat actors. Stay informed on Volt Typhoon’s impact on critical infrastructure and the strategic responses being implemented to safeguard national security. This is a great read that underscores the increasing significance of software supply chain security (SSCS). Software supply chain attacks are surging, with breaches involving third parties or suppliers spiking by 180% in 2023, according to Verizon's 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report. As these threats grow, understanding the fundamentals of SSCS is critical. SSCS involves three key steps: 1. **Curation** – Evaluating third-party software for risks. 2. **Creation** – Securing development processes and protecting code. 3. **Consumption** – Verifying software integrity and authenticity. With the financial impact of these attacks projected to rise from $40 billion in 2023 to $138 billion by 2031, it's crucial to implement continuous code scanning, automation, and source code analysis (SCA) tools – all of which are designed to mitigate and manage risk. Stay up to speed on emergent threats in this area, in particular in the coming months as we gear up for the implementation of CMMC 2.0. The increasing threats to critical infrastructure are a growing concern for the national and broader cybersecurity communities. Daily reports of new attacks, particularly recent spikes targeting ports by both criminal enterprises and nation-state actors, highlight the urgency of this issue. The ongoing situation with the recent cyberattack on the Port of Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport underscores the alarming trend of targeted attacks on critical infrastructure. If not addressed, these attacks could incapacitate or destroy vital systems, leading to severe consequences for national security, economic stability, and public health and safety. Our commitment goes beyond protecting the Defense Industrial Base, one of 16 critical infrastructure sectors. Our mission is to safeguard our nation and keep our clients and communities informed about emerging challenges. Staying informed and proactive in this space is essential as these threats continue to evolve.
