We are pleased to announce our recent win securing $17.5 million in funding to build a cutting-edge lithium-ion battery separator manufacturing facility in West Sacramento’s Capitol Innovation District. Our advanced separator technology improves battery durability, energy density, and cost while dropping in with existing Li-ion manufacturing. Big thanks to the California Energy Commission, CALSTART, Berkeley Lab, New Energy Nexus, and YUNEV, LLC for their tenacity and vision in creating the PowerForward Program to expand California’s leadership in domestic battery supply chains. With these funds, Sepion aims to address the significant domestic supply shortage of battery separators. This project supports partnerships with local organizations to train a high-tech manufacturing workforce and reinforces California’s position as a leader in sustainable manufacturing. Polyolefin separators interact with all major constituents within a Lithium cell – anode, cathode and electrolyte – and serve several critical functions including strong electrical insulation, good ionic conductivity, and high thermomechanical stability. Despite the many demands put on them, the separators deliver on everything at a very low cost. But the commodity nature of an incumbent separator makes it a “jack of all trades”, whereas functionalization of conventional base-layers with materials appropriate for today’s advanced batteries can allow them to do much more. Big news in EV battery safety! We are pleased to announce that by utilizing our proprietary AI-driven materials discovery platform, Sepion has developed a non-flammable liquid electrolyte that can greatly reduce the risk and severity of fires in EV batteries. With this achievement, we move closer to safely unlocking a 40% increase in range together with fast-charge capabilities for the next generation of EVs – accelerating their adoption worldwide. Our researchers subjected the newly discovered liquid electrolyte to flammability testing against standard commercial lithium-ion battery electrolytes, demonstrating its efficacy and safety features. Its flash point exceeded 70°C, and its self-extinguishing time (SET) was 25 times better than that of standard lithium-ion battery electrolytes.
