As #fires rage across the U.S. West and Midwest states, advanced monitoring #technologies are critical for protecting our natural resources. Multiple SERDP & ESTCP projects contributed to this recent USDA Forest Service publication focusing on a protocol for deploying a new technology that is changing the game for #ecosystem and fire effects monitoring: Terrestrial 3D Laser Scanning. The method in this report uses portable laser scanning equipment that can capture detailed information about forests, fuel levels, and ecological features in less than five minutes per area. The team also developed a system that automatically processes the data and provides a dashboard hosted by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for quick analysis, providing natural resource managers access to hundreds of different measurements instantly and helping address the increasingly fast pace of ecological change. #Military installations are currently conducting operational training and testing of TLS monitoring through ESTCP’s Innovation Landscape Network. After a successful small-scale ESTCP demonstration, an installation is expanding the use of an innovative #PFAS cleanup technology. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3LyetAB The D-FAS technology, sometimes referred to as in situ foam fractionation (ISFF) technology, minimizes the amount of waste to deal with by extracting a PFAS laden concentrate through the production of foam in situ that is removed from recovery wells under vacuum. ESTCP supports cleanup activities by demonstrating a range of new technologies – from treatment to destruction – for installations.

The EVI-LOCATE tool is designed for federal agencies to generate location-specific cost estimates and site layouts for electric vehicle charging projects. This ESTCP project with National Renewable Energy Laboratory significantly cuts the time and costs of planning #EV infrastructure – a process that would normally require onsite visits and various technical reports can be shortened to just 30 minutes with EVI-LOCATE. Our #SerdpEstcpWebinar tomorrow will focus on research to advance #sustainable #chemical biomanufacturing for DoD applications while reducing the production of toxic waste streams that need to be treated. Dr. David Graham with Oak Ridge National Laboratory will present his work on biological propellant stabilizers and limiting the production of hazardous byproducts. Dr. Philip Larese-Casanova with Northeastern University will also discuss the development of a flow-through electrochemical reactor for purifying mixed waste streams generated during the production of energetic materials.
