Following our recent acquisition of the Rialto Bioenergy Facility in Rialto, California, we are proud to be part of this effort to reduce food waste by generating biogas.
The U.S. government has committed to cutting food loss and waste in half by 2030. A recent report from Energy Vision identifies food waste anaerobic digesters as the top target for overall U.S. anaerobic digester expansion. https://lnkd.in/eAH2PwKe #HungerActionMonth #BenefitsOfBiogas #Biogas #StopFoodWaste #LandfillGas

At Sevana Bioenergy, we're proud to be part of the solution to the U.S. food waste crisis, with the acquisition of the Rialto project. Each year, 106 million tons of #FoodWaste are produced. Still, by expanding #biogas systems, like ours, we're helping to achieve the ambitious goal of reducing food loss and waste by 50% by 2030, as outlined in the National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste. By embracing anaerobic digestion and co-digestion technologies, we're ensuring that inedible food waste can be transformed into renewable energy, contributing to a more sustainable future.
The U.S. has a food waste problem—to the tune of 106 million tons of #FoodWaste produced annually. Adding more #biogas systems will be critical to achieving the national goal of reducing food loss and waste by 50% by 2030—which is stated in the National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics, released this summer by the Biden-Harris Administration. The strategy references the EPA’s Wasted Food Scale, which lists prevention and redirection of edible food waste as obvious first steps. It confirms the major role that anaerobic digestion can play in the disposal of inedible food waste. 110 food waste-only biogas systems are currently operating in the U.S., and 10 are expected to come on-line in 2024. While these facilities are helping to tackle the massive issue, options like co-digestion (adding food waste to biogas systems on farms, that are primarily digesting manure, and municipal wastewater treatment plants) will be vital to hitting the U.S. government benchmarks.

Sevana Bioenergy is working towards this solution through our multiple methane digester projects, which capture and convert methane from livestock waste into renewable natural gas (RNG). This process cuts emissions and contributes to the clean energy transition, making it a vital tool in the fight against climate change.
Did you know human activities now fuel two-thirds of global methane emissions (Global Carbon Project)? Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, contributing significantly to global warming. Key sources include agricultural waste, oil & gas & landfills. But solutions exist—like #renewablenaturalgas (#RNG), which captures methane before it reaches the atmosphere. By converting waste to energy, RNG reduces emissions and supports the clean energy transition, making it a critical tool in fighting #climatechange. Want to learn more? We are excited to contribute to this initiative to reduce food waste through biogas upon our recent acquisition of the Rialto Bioenergy Facility in Rialto, California, North America's largest organic waste-to-energy facility.
Don't miss this thoughtful opinion piece by our Executive Director Patrick Serfass. In it, he notes that America wastes 92 billion pounds of food every year. When that wasted food is landfilled it creates methane emissions. A White House plan released in June, “National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics," highlights #biogas systems as a key to reducing methane emissions from food waste.
