San Francisco’s state-mandated “housing element” requires that it plan for 82,000 new units between 2023 and 2031. On Friday, the California Department of Housing and Community Development ruled that San Francisco did not meet its housing permitting goals in 2023, making it the first city in California to be subject to Senate Bill 423, the housing streamlining legislation passed last fall.

Why has RH, formerly Restoration Hardware, become a luxury restaurant chain? It’s 11 a.m. on a Sunday, and the Palm Court restaurant at RH is filling up with brunchers. The vibe is Miami, Dubai, Vegas — though this, improbably, is San Francisco. It is also Cleveland, Palo Alto, Jacksonville, cities where RH, the Marin-based home furnishings company, operates restaurants within its stores, which it calls “galleries.” A look into the San Francisco store where you can buy a $14,000 chandelier and eat a $110 steak.
Welcome to RH. Can we offer you a $110 steak while you’re couch shopping?

At its southern end, Martin Luther King Jr. Way begins at the Port of Oakland, with Howard Terminal to the west and Jack London Square to the east. It’s a mostly gray industrial area, save for the colorful shipping containers lined up at the port, and often surrounded by freeway, port and railroad noise. There are few homes here; their average price is about $605,000. That’s about half as much as the average at the street’s other end, 6 miles away in Berkeley. This artery connects these two major East Bay cities. But the surroundings are vastly different at each end. Traversing the neighborhoods along its path reveals divergent realities in the communities it links. Check out the stunning visual essay: https://lnkd.in/gykHvayw 🎥: Brontë Wittpenn
