Happy Filipino American History Month! October commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States in October 18, 1587 in what is now known as Morro Bay. Filipino Americans are the third largest Asian American group in the U.S., and make up a significant portion of the population in the SF Bay Area. This month we honor the rich history, legacy, and countless contributions of Filipino Americans in our agency and our communities.

The Latinx community is incredibly diverse and makes up around 19% of the U.S population. As we continue to celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth, we'd like to introduce you to Katrina Navarro, a Human Resources Analyst: "I am Spanish, Salvadoran, and Palestinian, and I was born in San Francisco and raised in South San Francisco. Hispanic Heritage Month is a special time for me to celebrate and recognize the contributions and culture of the Hispanic community. As a Spanish and Salvadoran individual, I see it as an opportunity to honor my heritage and share our rich traditions with others. Professionally, I work as an HR Analyst for Talent Acquisition, Assessment, and Classification, where I enjoy networking with people who uphold the same values as I do and feel supported in being the best version of myself."

"Hispanic Heritage Month is very special. It is a time to feel proud of my Mexican culture and appreciate all others that also celebrate this month. It's a privilege we can share our food, music, and customs with everyone here at work! I'm part of SFHSA's Mi Gente employee resource group, and we're ramping up to celebrate through the new year as well." Eddie Estrada is a Section Manager with our Adult Protective Services Program. He was born in Santa Barbara and spent most of his youth in Lompoc, the rocket city, famous for its flower fields. When we asked him what he enjoyed the most about working at #SFHSA he said, "The sense of camaraderie and the support of the staff. From asking what name preference you have is really incredible, and always encouraging employees to take time off and recharge."

Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month! Every year in the U.S. from September 15th – October 15th we celebrate the achievements, histories, traditions, and cultural diversity of Hispanic and Latinx communities that have shaped both our city and our nation. #HispanicHeritageMonth is timed to coincide with the independence days of several Latin American countries, including: Costa Rica (9/15), El Salvador (9/15), Guatemala (9/15), Honduras (9/15), Nicaragua (9/15), Mexico (9/16), and Chile (9/18). This month serves as a powerful reminder of the shared history and struggles for independence and freedom across the Americas.
