🐟📈 NEWS: Steelhead trout rebound in Alameda Creek! Between 2015-2023 while conducting fish trapping surveys, SFPUC biologists captured and released 295 steelhead on Alameda Creek, an average of about 37 a year. This year alone, SFPUC biologists monitored, captured, and released 2,588 steelhead! The dramatic increase in steelhead is part of a larger, decades-long effort to restore habitat of this native species. A healthy steelhead trout population means a healthier watershed, which in turn means better quality drinking water. "Everyone loves a good comeback story. The hero of this tale happens to have gills. After decades, steelhead in Alameda Creek are not only thriving, they’re on their way out to the bay and the ocean beyond. Our commitment to strong environmental stewardship is unwavering, and it’s fantastic to see this partnership and hard work pay off. Now we’re looking forward to seeing adult steelhead return up the creek in a few years to spawn. That would make quite a homecoming.” - SFPUC General Manager Dennis Herrera Alameda County Water District Read More: https://lnkd.in/gUwCpYKh

To comply with the latest seismic #Safety standards and restore the supply reliability of its regional #WaterInfrastructure system, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) developed the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project. 🌊 With construction managed by a Black & Veatch-led team, a new replacement dam built near that Calaveras Fault can withstand a maximum credible earthquake of 7.25-magnitude. 💪 This allows the SFPUC to again fill the reservoir, securing the resilience, vitality and reliability of #WaterResources for some 2.7 million customers. Thank you San Francisco Public Utilities Commission for hosting our Right Relations Phase 2 cohort last week! We visited the Alameda Creek Watershed Center and learned a lot about water, native plants in the watershed, and SFPUC’s partnership with the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. Not pictured but very much present in this day: an abundance of snacks, garden bounty, and even songs shared amongst this crew.
