Strategies for Youth is dedicated to improving police/youth relations and reducing disproportionate minority contact.
About us
Strategies for Youth is the only national organization which exists solely for the purpose of improving police/youth interactions, advocating for the training of public safety officers in the science of child and youth development, and supporting community partnerships that build strong police/youth relationships. Strategies for Youth not only trains law enforcement and communities, but also serve as a technical advisor to the U.S Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention while work directly on policy reform on the national, state, and departmental levels. Core Values We believe police trainings that provide practical insights from the science of child and adolescent development and psychiatry are effective methods for enhancing the skills and options of officers when working with children and youth. We believe that police departments’ effectiveness and legitimacy is determined by the quality of their interactions with children and youth. We believe that communities should be partners with police in assuring the safety of children and youth, and promoting respectful relationships. We believe that how children and youth are policed has critical long-term implications for youths’ ability to fully participate in American society and their respect for the American system of law and order. We believe that investing in training officers how to interact effectively with children and youth supports the development of positive relationships between youth and officers and strengthens communities. We believe training programs are most effective when officers and youth are involved in creating and presenting them. We believe data demonstrating disproportionate rates of police contact with minority youth can be addressed through training, diversion, and innovation.

✨ Supervising the Teen Brain: Train the Trainers Course. The Contra Costa County Probation Department identified key staff to become trainers on effective strategies for interacting and supervising youth. Through the department’s partnership with Strategies for Youth – a renowned national policy and training organization dedicated to ensuring best outcomes for youth interacting with law enforcement – our officers participated in a 4-day Train-the-Trainer course which is based on research of adolescent brain development, and developed a course to equip officers with knowledge and skills that are trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate, and racially equitable. The Probation Department is proud to take part in this effort to train local law enforcement on increasing positive interactions with young people by building officer capacity and knowledge and linking them to key youth-serving resources. Thank you to Strategies for Youth for this amazing course! #probation #cccprobation #contracostacounty #teen #teendevelopment #evidencebased #evidencebasedapproaches #trainers #coaching #youth

We showcased our policies while Derby St. Fort, a law enforcement executive, made the case for law enforcement use of SFY's policies to reduce traumatizing youth. Ed Burkhammer showcased Ohio's use of developmentally appropriate standards and policies required for law enforcement agencies that want to be accredited there.

Very disturbing conduct by St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant & County Attorney David Migut stemming from an investigatory stop based on ethnic and immigrant status. There is a better way and incidents like this highlight the need for Law Enforcement policies that are developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and equitable! Swipe to read SFY's Policy #5 & Policy #6 about use of force and using fair and impartial policing.
