A fundamentally different approach to learning.
About us
Shady Hill School is an independent, co-educational day school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1915, Shady Hill serves students in pre-kindergarten (called 'Beginners) through 8th grade. The school has an enrollment of approximately 500 students. Current Shady Hill Head of School Mark Stanek became the school's sixth director in 2010. A teaching approach called Central Subject is the fundamental organizing force behind Shady Hill's curriculum. It is a year-long study around which each grade, III - VIII, focuses its work in history, literature, geography, and writing. It is the study of a people, a period of history, an idea or movement. It is a way of organizing subject matter that is flexible, inclusive, frequently changing in its application, yet constant in its commitment to certain approaches to study.

The Shady Hill School’s Teacher Training Center offers two $21,000 Fellowships: the Urban Teacher Fellowship and the Katharine Taylor Teacher-Researcher Fellowship. The well-respected Teacher Training Center is looking for two aspiring educators who seek experience in a progressive school, are passionate about teaching and learning, and want to have a positive impact on students. If you do not want to apply for the fellowship but are still interested in participating in the teacher residency, please also complete and submit the application. We have worked as a leadership team to remove financial or administrative barriers to applying to the Shady Hill School’s teacher residency program. When we receive your application, we will respond quickly to encourage mission-aligned applicants to visit our campus, meet faculty and current apprentices, and get a true sense of our history, commitment to social justice, and educational impact. We are excited to form the 2025-2026 cohort and look forward to connecting with you. Submit your application today! https://lnkd.in/eUhJe5Tr Questions? Email: kristen.skinner@shs.org.
