Did you know that we grew ginger at our Northside farm this year? We have experimented with growing a small amount of ginger in pots in the past but have never grown enough to send to programs. We used about 15 feet of bed space in our high tunnel to grow ginger this year and it has been a smash success both in terms of harvest yields but also in the “wow!” reactions that we get from students that are here for field trips.

It was a beautiful October night this past Wednesday for our annual Harvest Festival event at the Northside farm. A couple hundred folks gathered for soups, s'mores, fire pits, volunteer awards, live music, and just the most incredible sunset to end the evening. Thank you to everyone that came out for the food and the fun- both were unforgettable! Another big shoutout to our sponsors for the event- our Presenting Sponsor Capital One, our S'mores Station Sponsor Genworth, and our Community Level Sponsors Ali Faruk and Wegmans Food Markets. Thank you for making this celebration possible!

We are incredibly grateful to Virginia Credit Union for years of support and service. They have contributed $100,000 to our work over the years!
Virginia Credit Union is taking action against hunger by promoting food security and accessibility in the local community. VACU members and employees recently volunteered at Richmond-based Shalom Farms, harvesting crops and taking on maintenance projects. “We’re proud to continue our long and successful partnership with Shalom Farms,” said VACU President/CEO Chris Shockley. Since 2018, VACU has donated $100,000 to the nonprofit in support of their mission to build healthy communities with healthy food. If you've been to our Northside farm in the last week or so, you've probably noticed something new popping up! We are so happy to share the upcoming Community Pavilion which will include a large covered area and outdoor kitchen! It takes a village to raise a pavilion, and we have a lot of people to thank in ours! Thank you to the Robins Foundation for funding such an incredible asset for our community, to Union Presbyterian Seminary for entrusting us with their land and being wonderful partners, to Beth & Eric Hilscher for the detailed design work that made this vision tangible, and Add A Deck Inc. and Basinger Brothers for bringing this vision to life.

If you haven't RSVPed to our Harvest Festival- what are you waiting for? You don't want to miss this great event. Soups served will be Beef Barley, Kale White Bean, and Savory Salsa! Also plenty of marshmallows for roasting and s'mores! Don't forget to grab a farm tour while you're there and visit our Mobile Market for fresh produce straight from our farm! All proceeds of the event benefit our food justice work in the community.
We are excited to host our third annual Harvest Festival at the Northside farm! Make plans to come celebrate an incredible season with us over a family-style meal and s'mores! https://lnkd.in/eA-2zsem

We have to shout out a big thank you to Altria for funding and helping assemble the fence to our new land (thank you, Union Presbyterian Seminary for entrusting us with more!) It's looking great as we get ready to prep the space for cover crops and then new fields and beds next year!

We are so grateful to have Devin on our team!
🌟 Scholar Spotlight: Devin Morgan 🌟 Meet Devin Morgan, a driven third-year student at the University of Richmond, double majoring in political science and environmental studies. As both a Presidential and Bonner Scholar, Devin combines academic excellence with a deep passion for environmental advocacy and community service. As Vice President of Green UR, Devin leads sustainability efforts on campus, driving initiatives like recycling drives and waste reduction campaigns. His commitment to environmental justice extends beyond campus, as a member of the Sierra Club Youth Leader Council, where he advocates for positive change within Virginia. Devin’s dedication to social justice shines through his work with Shalom Farms, tackling food insecurity through sustainable agriculture. He also played a pivotal role with TurnUp Activism, working to increase youth voter turnout in underrepresented communities. "I am grateful to EMERGE for continuously empowering young, bright, BIPOC students and showing us that we deserve to be in these prestigious spaces, making great strides for not only our families, but our communities as well." Devin said. "Thanks to EMERGE I have gotten the opportunity to do things I could only dream about." We're so proud to watch Devin making a lasting impact in both his community and the broader world. We can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next!
