About us

The non-profit 501(c)(3) J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center, located in San Juan Capistrano, began in 1978 as The Orange County Riding Center. It was founded by Nancy and Derek Lewis for their son, Michael, who was born with cerebral palsy. Because social worker and equestrienne, Fran Joswick, was the Center’s first instructor and executive director, the Center was renamed the Fran Joswick Therapeutic Riding Center. In 2001, the J.F. Shea Co., Inc. donated eight acres of land for a permanent facility and the Center was again renamed as the J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center. Accredited at the “premier” level by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.), The Shea Center is internationally recognized for its excellence in therapeutic programs. It is also is a therapeutic riding training facility drawing interns and students from around the world. The modest beginnings of The Shea Center have yielded an organization that has become one of the top equine assisted therapy centers in the world. The Center now serves over 1,200 participants each year and provides more than 14,000 hours of client services annually. Utilizing 23 horses and the assistance of more than 800 community volunteers, the Center has grown to be an organization with a $4 million annual operating budget. The Center’s team consists of 28 full-time and 17 part-time and contract staff members. All instructors and therapy professionals who perform evaluations, assessments, and create individualized treatment programs for their clients are PATH Intl. certified. Over 75 distinct disabilities are addressed through a variety of programs that include physical, occupational, and speech therapies. The Shea Center’s state-of-the-art equestrian facility consists of two covered arenas, one open arena, a forty-stall barn, two round pens, a farrier and veterinarian area, and riding trails.

With deep sorrow, we share sad news about our beloved therapy horse, Superman. After careful consideration and consultation with our veterinarian and equine team, we made the incredibly difficult decision to humanely euthanize Superman on Wednesday, October 30th, due to rapidly progressing neuropathy that has begun to compromise his mobility. Originally intended for retirement, it has become clear that a safe transition is no longer possible due to his declining condition. This decision was made with Superman’s best interest at heart, ensuring his comfort and dignity in his final moments. Superman joined The Shea Center family in 2020 and immediately became a source of joy and inspiration. His sensitive nature, calm demeanor, and steadfast presence made him an incredible partner for our independent riders. His gentle spirit touched countless lives, and his contributions to our program will never be forgotten. We will miss him dearly and are grateful for the time we had with this truly super horse—his name says it all. We encourage you to share messages about Superman in the comments.💗

Meet our mulit-talented Data & Systems Administrator Anissa Rodriguez! ✍️What she does at The Shea Center: “I work behind the scenes to help manage Salesforce, the software database our staff use every day for everything from scheduling client appointments to tracking donations. My day varies from making reports, processing new data that comes in, and training staff on how to use the system. I also get to work alongside our Salesforce consultant to roll out larger projects and new features.” ✍️How she got started: “In 2022 I was several years deep into a career in Property Management where I was managing a small apartment community, and I decided I wanted to try out something new and find an organization to work for that did good for the community. I had interest and experience in managing different kinds of data in the systems I used in my previous roles and decided to learn a new technology. Nearly a year later, with a new certification and a few learning projects under my belt, I was hired at Shea!” ✍️The most rewarding part of her job is: “Getting the look of excitement from a fellow staff member when I’m able to help make even one small aspect of their job go a little quicker, help troubleshoot something that isn’t working as it should, or provide valuable data that lives in our system in a way that makes sense.”
