“I kicked up a storm—No, I don’t believe I belong in Progress Place. I’m a working woman” Elizabeth’s journey to stability is a testament to her resilience and the support she found through Shepherd’s Table. She turned to Progress Place in 2022 after losing her home and becoming unemployed. At Shepherd’s Table, Elizabeth could access essential services including meals, clothing, and the Resource Center. Our hot prepared meals, in particular, have played an enormous part in her return to physical and mental wellness, which are some of her biggest goals. Meet the Staff! Daniel joined the Shepherd’s Table team as Lead Chef at the end of 2024. He brings over a decade of culinary experience and a deep passion for food. Before coming to Shepherd’s Table, Daniel served as the Operations Manager and Chef Instructor for nine years at Impact Silver Spring, a local nonprofit. There, he combined his love for cooking with his commitment to teaching and community empowerment. Before Impact Silver Spring, Daniel refined his skills in several prestigious kitchens, including a chef position at Jaleo and Central, a Michelin-starred restaurant. He also gained experience at Komi, a Greco-Roman restaurant group, and trained overseas under the guidance of world-renowned Chef José Andrés. His culinary journey began in high school, when he earned the Top Teen Chef Award. This led him to pursue formal culinary training at the Art Institute of Washington and later at the Academy de Cuisine. As Head Chef, Daniel looks forward to creating fresh, nutritious, and quality meals for our guests and is dedicated to bringing people together through food. #meetthestaff #culinary #newhires #leadchef #foodinsecurity #nonprofit #kitchen

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we reflect on the incredible legacy of hope, justice, and service he left behind. At Shepherd’s Table, our volunteers are the backbone of our mission. Without them, we would not be able to feed the on average 400 meals we serve per day to those in need. Today, we welcomed Dorina, a first-time volunteer, who brought her children along to help. “We try to do something for the community on this day every year”, she shared. A quick search led her to Shepherd’s Table, and she was thrilled to find an opportunity close by to give back with her children by her side. We are deeply grateful for volunteers like Dorina, who exemplify Dr. King’s powerful words: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” #MLKDay #dayofservice #community #hope #volunteer #helpingothers #foodinsecurity

Thanks to your continued support over the past 41 years, we continue to grow and make a meaningful impact in our community. In 2024, we achieved significant milestones, continuing to feed more people in our organization's history, refining our Beyond the Table program to partner with other non-profit organizations that reach specific communities in need, such as Stephen Knolls and Horizons students, resuming full operations at our Eye Clinic, launching our Culinary Skills Training Program (CSTP), and implementing the first year of our strategic plan. Among these accomplishments, we also witnessed inspiring success stories as we successfully graduated our first cohort of the CSTP and are working towards graduating the second cohort. As we reflect on the successes of 2024, we are reminded of the prevalence of food insecurity, with a 16.49% increase in meals served at Progress Place from the previous year. We look forward to embracing new opportunities to broaden our reach, make a greater impact, and continue this meaningful work together!
