This week, we were proud to be recognized in the 2024 Engineering News-Record California's Best Projects competition. The Greek Theatre Upper Bowl Improvements at the University of California, Berkeley received the Best Project award in the Cultural/Worship category. When U.C. Berkeley’s beloved 120-year-old Greek Theatre needed attention to improve safety, comfort and capacity of its upper bowl, the team closely studied the steeply sloped lawn and solved for complicated existing conditions, ultimately improving accessibility, acoustics, sight lines and overall guest experience. This is us! (And keep reading, because it could also be you!) Sherwood’s Santa Cruz, California-based team recently enjoyed a great day out on the water, celebrating another season of interesting, challenging, fun, and fulfilling Civil Engineering work on projects that bring people and nature together in sustainable ways. For example, working closely with the project’s conservation partners and collaborators, we recently guided the restoration of San Vicente Redwoods—an 8,852-acre conservation area that protects Santa Cruz County’s delicate and diverse ecosystems, even as they recover from a devastating wildfire. Earlier this year, the project earned a Merit Award in the 2024 California Trails & Greenways Award Program. As we wrap up this week’s landscape series in honor of #ASLA2024, come with us to New Orleans—the site of next year’s ASLA conference—where we’ve been working on the Mirabeau Water Garden with Waggonner & Ball , CARBO Landscape Architecture, and others. One of the most significant projects to emerge from Greater New Orleans’ city-wide water management plan, Mirabeau Water Garden takes a big step in a new direction toward living with water rather than fighting against it. This groundbreaking project—currently under construction—shifts the conventional mindset to allow stormwater into public spaces, and has required creative architecture and engineering solutions to choreograph the water so that it’s managed safely and effectively. The 25-acre park transforms vital public infrastructure into equally valuable public recreation space, and features numerous innovative tools, technologies and processes that provide a roadmap for living with water long-term: restoring groundwater levels, reducing subsidence, rebuilding ecologies, slowing stormwater, reducing the costs associated with emergency response and recovery by mitigating flood risk to nearby homes and property, and ultimately strengthening communities. Next year, when you’re at the American Society of Landscape Architects 2025 conference in the City of New Orleans, you can visit Mirabeau Water Garden in person. In our work, we’re aiming to solve difficult engineering challenges in harmony with nature—designing to meet and exceed technical requirements with ecological sensitivity and leaving a lasting positive impact on both people and landscapes. On the campus of Dia Beacon—the contemporary art museum along the Hudson River in New York, where numerous Richard Serra sculptures now permanently reside—we’ve been working with Studio Zewde to reimagine the back 8 acres of the site and make the otherwise soggy land usable and functional. New sculptural landforms serve as a gesture to the land’s heritage as an important river crossing for the indigenous Lenape community, and also serve as basins that will protect the historic museum and its priceless art from rising stormwater. We can’t prevent flooding. That’s nature. But we can create sustainable infrastructure that reduces the risk of harm to people or property as it integrates with the landscape. Nearby, our engineers are currently working on the AIA Global Campus for Architecture & Design, part of a collaborative team that is transforming The American Institute of Architects (AIA) headquarters into an international hub for design innovation, community and sustainability. As the project nears completion in the year ahead, we look forward to sharing more insights into the way this renovation embodies AIA’s core values of climate action, resilience and equity—which strongly align with ours.

Have you seen India Basin lately? Located in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood, Indian Basin Waterfront Park is the transformation of an historic boatyard and an underutilized park, and it’s creating long-deserved and much-needed green space and water access for residents. Sherwood is civil engineer on the project, creating an innovative and resilient stormwater system, working with GGN, Jensen Architects, RANA, Moffatt & Nichol, Swinerton and others. Stay tuned as we share more about this landmark project in the months ahead. LUMCON Blue Works received a 2024 AIA Louisiana Merit Award for Architecture! Located in an industrial area of Houma, Louisiana, Blue Works is a new 25,500 SF satellite campus for the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium LUMCON. A statewide academic endeavor, their stated mission is "to promote, facilitate, and conduct research and education collaborations among Louisiana’s universities relevant to the sustainability of coastal and marine environments of the Gulf of Mexico." Featuring research labs, classrooms, and assembly spaces, the facility complements LUMCON’s original but increasingly threatened facility in Cocodrie. If the original LUMCON allowed scientists from all over Louisiana access to facilities for research on the Gulf, Blue Works LUMCON is designed to make that accessible to the public. We are excited to see what the folks at LUMCON Blue Works will do to impact Louisiana coastal resiliency, and we could not be prouder of our team for this recognition. We're honored to have Pleasant Hill Library recognized with a 2024 AIA California Design Award! Working with the City of Pleasant Hill to create its first civic building in many years, the project team created an inclusive community destination where visitors of all ages feel welcome and encouraged to learn, create, and explore.
