This recent #WorldMeteorologicalAssociation press release makes the impact and burden of climate change clear. As they state, "On average, African countries are losing 2–5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and many are diverting up to 9 percent of their budgets responding to climate extremes." We, at Shockwave, urge other funders to recognize this crisis and invest strategically in climate adaptation and resilience in the Global South. https://lnkd.in/gNUXwv_E

“Wetlands and peatlands can store up to twice as much carbon as forests yet are being destroyed 3x as fast. Wastewater generates nearly as much emissions as the aviation industry. Drip irrigation would reduce methane emissions from rice production by 50%. These are some examples of #WINZ, where water action is a climate solution.” The Shockwave, Pictet and Vitol Foundations are jointly supporting the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (#AGWA) to launch the Water Initiative Net Zero (WINZ) – to convene, curate and create leading knowledge on water's role for climate mitigation. They have just launched their website: https://lnkd.in/gWF-Zwq2 - which will provide resources, insights and evidence as well as messaging platforms to build awareness and understanding of water as a climate solution – an essential component in our efforts to reduce emissions towards net zero. To stay informed of WINZ activities, you can follow them on LinkedIn and X, and subscribe to the WINZ newsletter.

We're excited to announce that the Shockwave Foundation has joined ClimateWorks Foundation and other philanthropic leaders who launched a collective call to action on climate adaptation and resilience. https://lnkd.in/emkF8mhm We need significant momentum to scale adaptation action as we accelerate climate change mitigation work in parallel. “Even if the rise in temperature eventually slows as a result of more ambitious collective climate change mitigation efforts, climate risks will accelerate with every fraction of a degree because of the compounding and cascading nature of climate-related impacts.” (UN Environment Program Adaptation Gap Report 2023) This call to action is an important step forward. It builds upon the work of several philanthropic organizations and builds a clear vision for philanthropy’s role in this space. We believe that collective voices, and more importantly, collective action, like this, are essential to make significant progress.

We’re thrilled to embark on a partnership with the Africa Sand Dam Foundation (ASDF), providing unrestricted support for their work strengthening climate resilience through soil and water conservation projects. ASDF works with communities in rural semi-arid regions of Kenya to improve food and water security using a tailored, community-driven approach. We're particularly impressed with their focus on sand dams, a simple, low-cost, low-maintenance technology that retains rainwater and recharges groundwater. We’re excited to walk alongside ASDF and share their progress as they give communities the knowledge and skills to adapt to climate change, ensure #sustainabledevelopment , and build #climateresilience .
