Shoppers in the USA 🇺🇸 during Q2 2024 showed evolving preferences and behaviors in the soft drinks category: 1. Health Concerns There is a growing trend of consumers seeking alternatives to traditional sugary sodas, driven by health concerns and a desire to reduce sugar intake. Many are exploring options like sparkling water, flavored seltzers, and zero-calorie versions of popular sodas. However, the transition can be challenging, with some finding it difficult to adjust to less sweet options initially. Gradual reduction of sugar intake and experimenting with various alternatives seem to be effective strategies for many. 2. Brand Loyalty Brand loyalty remains strong, particularly for iconic brands like Coca-Cola. Consumers express interest in 'Mexican Coke' made with cane sugar, perceiving it as a premium or more authentic version. There's also curiosity about formulation differences between countries. However, blind taste tests suggest the appeal may be more about packaging (glass bottles) than actual taste differences. 3. Convenience and Value Convenience and value are key factors influencing purchasing decisions. Many shoppers are price-sensitive, comparing costs across retailers and even considering crossing state lines for better deals on bulk purchases. The availability of at-home carbonation systems like SodaStream is changing how some consumers approach soft drink consumption, allowing for customization and potentially reducing costs. 4. Alternative Hydration Health-conscious consumers are increasingly aware of alternative hydration options, including vitamin-enhanced waters, coconut water, and electrolyte drinks. There's growing interest in functional beverages that offer benefits beyond simple refreshment. However, marketing claims are met with some skepticism, and consumers express a desire for clearer information about ingredients and health impacts. Conclusion: Retailers and suppliers should consider diversifying their soft drink offerings to include more low/no sugar options and functional beverages. There may be opportunities in premium or 'authentic' versions of classic sodas. Emphasizing value, especially for bulk purchases, could drive sales.
