SHPE at the University of Florida

About us

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Chapter at the University of Florida (SHPE UF) was formerly known as the Hispanic Engineering Society. It was founded in the fall of 1982 in an effort to provide Hispanic Engineers, Mathematicians, and Scientists with opportunities to develop as professionals while offering an amiable social environment. Since its inception it has prompted the recruitment, retention, and graduation of Hispanic students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The society coordinates community outreach, corporate exposition meetings, academic development programs, and non-technical events. This is to ensure SHPE-UF members are presented with the opportunities necessary to succeed professionally, academically, and socially as Hispanic professionals. The University of Florida's Hispanic Engineering Society established a strong connection with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, but it was not until the summer of 2001 that the society underwent a name change in order to affirm its close relationship with SHPE National. Today, The University of Florida Chapter holds a strong and enriching relationship with SHPE National, which has helped increase membership in the society. Our drive to further involvement in the society led to a strong presence from the chapter at National Conference and other events. With over 215 members attending, The University of Florida had the largest number of members present at this year's conference. The determination of the chapter's leaders has also led to incredible involvement and retention of first-year students in the society. As a family, we take pride in the passion that is evident among our members. We have observed the success created by past leaders in our chapter, and are honored to have the opportunity to further their excellence.

I am very excited to share that the 2024 SHPE Corporate Database has officially been published and sent to SHPE chapters nationwide! This database is one of the key resources that will help SHPEitos succeed at the 2024 National Convention in Anaheim, California. Unique to our chapter, it includes detailed information on all the amazing sponsors and companies attending the convention. As the Lead Corporate Database Director, I want to extend a special thanks to my amazing team of directors: Francesca Perfetto Alvarez, Jennifer Gongora Caruncho, and Raúl Rojas. Your hard work and dedication have been crucial in bringing this project to life, and I’m beyond proud of what we’ve accomplished together! A huge thank you to our fantastic VP Corporate, Alexandra Tabares, for your leadership and unwavering support throughout this process. Your guidance has been instrumental! We’re excited to see how this resource will impact SHPE members at the convention and beyond! #SHPE2024 #SHPENationalConvention #Anaheim2024

Second-Year Computer Science Student at the University of Florida

As I begin my second year at the University of Florida, I reflect on how much the UF Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers has contributed to my growth and success. Their guidance and leadership have been instrumental, and I'm genuinely grateful for the support. This past Wednesday, I had the privilege of paying it forward by co-hosting an event with Ryan Rodriguez and Monique Alfonso during UF SHPE's Welcome Week. We shared tips on navigating the first year at UF, focusing on effective resource management, and the importance of getting involved early on. A huge thank you to Juan M. Valderrama, Vanessa Scarpetta, and Damariz Gallegos for their invaluable contributions to making this event a success. I'm excited to see our new members find their place within SHPE and start positively impacting our community!

  • For our last week of Internship ExSHPErience spotlights, meet Diego Rey and Legasse Remon! Here is some insight on what they have been up to this summer! We are so proud of our SHPEitos and all of their accomplishments! Diego is currently interning at HARDESTY & HANOVER CONSTRUCTION SERVICES, LLC! In his own words, "One of the things I loved about interning at H&H was the opportunity to work on local projects that impacted me and my community. Some of those projects I was unaware they were happening, and being part of that felt really cool". Legasse is currently interning Mastercard! In his own words, "Mastercard has shown me various technical cyber-defense mechanisms to stop real-time attacks. You never go a day without learning something new because everything is unexpected". #SHPE #INTERNSHIP #SHPEUF #GOGATORS

  • For this week's Internship ExSHPErience spotlights, meet Malena Diez and Marvin Howell-Aguirre! Here is some insight on what they have been up to this summer! We are so proud of our SHPEitos and all of their accomplishments! Malena is currently interning at BioTissue! In her own words, "Interning at BioTissue has allowed me to make an impact on ground-breaking regenerative technology, most of which has never been done before. Seeing the process of how birth tissue is transformed to create an ocular graft to help patients with a variety of ocular diseases has been the highlight of my summer". Marvin is currently interning at Meta! In his own words, "One of many cool things from my internship is the amount of food amenities Meta have for employees and interns! Their headquarters have over 24 places to eat for free ranging from specialized cafeterias like smoked bbq, mexican, japanese, and italian food (also includes sweet shops if you want ice cream or special desserts!). Four of the cafeterias on campus have rotating categories for lunch and dinner by cuisines. One of my favorite days was when they served jamaican food and had oxtail". #SHPE #INTERNSHIP #SHPEUF #GOGATORS
