#DidYouKnow... #SickleCellDisease ...is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern? This means a child must inherit two sickle cell genes, one from each parent, to develop the disease. If they inherit only one sickle cell gene, they will have the sickle cell trait and usually no symptoms but can pass the gene to their children. ... #CRISPR gene-editing technology is being explored as a potential cure for sickle cell disease? Early trials have shown promising results, with some patients experiencing significant improvements in symptoms and quality of life after treatment, like our speaker Jimi Olaghere that had the treatment and is living a full life! The executive director of Sickle Forward, Dr. Alan Anderson, was recently traveling in Antigua and was struck by the inclusion of artwork from the Antigua and Barbuda Sickle Cell Association in this banner at the airport showcasing the importance promoting and protecting health just like any other human right. At Sickle Forward, we believe that all children have a right to diagnosis and basic treatment of sickle cell disease. We strive to advance access to rapid testing and life-saving medications in parts of the world where this has been severely limited in the past. As we celebrate World Sickle Cell Day on June 19th, may we all strive to "provide hope through progress by advancing care globally."
