The business landscape is evolving rapidly, driven by globalization, technological advancements, and increasing consumer demands for sustainability. To thrive in this complex environment, organizations must transform into a sustainable digital enterprise. Siemens’ Electronics Factory in Erlangen, Germany provides a compelling example of a successful digital transformation journey. By leveraging technologies such as digital twins, artificial intelligence, IT/OT convergence, and the Industrial Metaverse, Erlangen has significantly increased productivity and is well on its way to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. Key strategies for a competitive sustainable digital enterprise include: • Leverage digital technologies such as the ones noted above • Prioritize sustainability by setting clear goals and reducing carbon footprint • Focus on people - upskilling and reskilling the workforce, and creating a work culture that embraces experimentation Delve deeper into a specific aspect of building a sustainable digital enterprise via the link in our comments! #DigitalTransformation

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (#CFD) has become synonymous with aerodynamic optimization in automotive and aerospace engineering. However, its origins lie in the watery depths. In this Digital Engineering 24/7 article, we dive back into CFD’s maritime roots to explore how this technology has evolved to meet the demands of the marine industry. The America’s Cup, a prestigious sailing competition, has been at the forefront of marine technological innovation. The recent rule prohibiting physical testing of boat designs has forced teams to rely heavily on computer simulations. As a result, the #AmericasCup has become a crucible for CFD advancements, pushing the boundaries of what's possible with this powerful tool. #AC37 #Innovation #Simulation

  • What is the future like for the medical device and pharmaceutical industry, especially with the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic? In our Industry Forward Podcast, we sat down with Jim Thompson, our Sr. Director of Digital Strategy for #MedicalDevices and Pharmaceuticals, who shed light on the industry's recent landscape. He emphasized how the pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities inherent in highly globalized supply chains, a common structure within medical devices and #pharmaceuticals. The chip shortage, a direct result of the pandemic, significantly disrupted medical device manufacturing, leading to production delays and shortages. As a result, many companies are rethinking their supply chain strategies to build resilience against future disruptions. This includes bringing production closer to home (reshoring) and diversifying their supplier base across different geographic regions.

  • How can software offer a racing team a competitive advantage in the upcoming 37th America’s Cup? Just ask Orient Express Racing Team! ⛵ The elite team, housed within sports tech firm K CHALLENGE RACING & LAB, aims to win the most prestigious international sailing competitions, including the America’s Cup. Mastering this ultra-competitive environment is the drive behind the company’s creativity and capacity for innovation. And we’re excited to help them in their endeavors! Working in close collaboration with Siemens’ Simcenter Engineering Services, Orient Express Racing Team is gaining an understanding of real-world performance of the hydraulic flight and aeronautic systems that control sails and rudder/foil flaps actuation. Digital twins of these systems have been built, parameterized and functionally validated (along with the creation of dedicated libraries) that help ensure the layout and interface are comprehensive and easy to operate in a multidisciplinary team effort spanning the Performance, Mechatronic and Hydraulic groups. “Sailing boats have dramatically changed since the arrival of foil technology enabling them to fly above the water. Managing two fluids and all the new aerospace flying technologies has become a real challenge as the game is completely changed,” said Stephan Kandler, CEO of K-Challenge and Orient Express Racing Team. “Digital twins and virtual testing became a major breakthrough to enhance the R&D of the boats besides real sailing. Having Siemens on our side was a key element of K-Challenge Racing & LAB's strategy in the America’s Cup but also for other developments in the maritime transport decarbonation." When the team finds that performance is deviating from expectations, data from the water is taken as reference and engineers introduce modifications in the systems model to try and match simulation results and data – which allows them to target inspection and maintenance more accurately and efficiently. During race preparations, there is also potential to use the same digital twin-based systems model, already prepared for real-time performance, to be exploited for streaming live data from the race to the models and to compare the response in real time. And when the boat is not at sea, the systems models are connected to K-Challenge’s virtual-reality simulator. There’s a secret to striking the balance between the challenges and opportunities of the ever-changing industrial landscape— the executable digital twin (XDT). Increasingly becoming an open secret, the executable digital twin (xDT) offers a pivotal advancement by bridging the gap between IT and OT systems, effectively integrating digital twin models into operational processes. Linking digital representations of physical assets and processes with real-time data enhances decision-making, improves operational efficiency, and increases agility. And that helps build a stronger competitive edge by leveraging high-fidelity #simulation models in operational context. From a financial perspective, the integration of simulation into everyday operations through executable #DigitalTwin technology offers substantial economic and operational benefits including: • increased sales success • reduced project and machine commissioning costs • enhanced control and efficiency. There’s more detail in our blog post linked in the comments!

  • The future will be carved by the hands of humanity and the grippers of machinery. Additive manufacturing is helping manufactures make grippers that are energy efficient and sustainable—in both production and use. How? By using additive manufacturing, manufacturers can now integrate lightweight design principles into gripper fabrication processes, leading to more sustainable and energy-efficient designs. As a factory is retooled for the next job, it is possible to move the larger, less energy-efficient robots to areas where their brawn is necessary and replace them with smaller robots. Multiplying savings by each robot in the factory and each factory across the world, a single company, depending on their size, could achieve substantial savings in energy usage and CO2 emissions. #AdditiveManufacturing #Sustainability #Manufacturing

  • “What about my IP?” Tony Hemmelgarn answers this frequently asked question by customers who are curious about leveraging the power of #AI on their own workflows and data, which are increasingly likely to reside in the cloud. “You take Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and couple it with Teamcenter. This is the way we protect your data and make sure we can use the AI in a robust way and still take care of all the information you want to have secure to your environment.”

  • The fabric of modern society is connected by the thread of #manufacturing. Digitalization is refining that thread and revolutionizing manufacturing through integration of technologies like #IoT (Internet of Things), AI (Artificial Intelligence), cloud computing, and big data analytics into production processes, driving efficiency, cost reduction, and faster cycles through real-time monitoring and automated decision-making. A digital thread is a connected and traceable series of digitized and automated activities throughout the product or production lifecycle. It integrates data flow and connectivity across various stages, from design and manufacturing to maintenance and beyond. This ensures the availability of accurate data and actionable insights across the process flow.
