National Public Lands Day, Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer event for public lands. It also celebrates the connection between people and the environment, educating and cultivating environmental stewards. As a special Nevada twist, we’re celebrating Nevada Public Lands Day too, with an editorial piece by CEO Sean Hill sharing his support of the Nevada Outdoor Education Fund. Thank you Nevada Conservation League for helping us spread the word about conservation and protecting Nevada’s natural resources. https://lnkd.in/g2u7Wj8S #NationalPublicLandsDay #NevadaPublicLands #STEMeducation

Innovative outdoor, science-based education programs for youth.
About us
The New Nature of Learning Sierra Nevada Journeys is a 501(c)3 nonprofit in Northern Nevada and Northern California that delivers innovative outdoor, science-based education programs for youth to develop critical thinking skills and to inspire natural resource stewardship. Through multiple points of contact, our classroom-based programs, overnight science camps, professional development for teachers, and parent engagement opportunities surround students with resources they need to succeed. All programs are designed to foster higher cognition and build long-term student achievement. We prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our view is that active reflection, engagement, and commitment to these principles is crucial to creating a workplace that has diverse perspectives.

Great news! The evacuation warning has been lifted, and we are excited to welcome campers this weekend. The roads are open in both directions on Highways 70 and 89 into Portola, California. The conditions are safe, the air quality is good, and blue skies will greet you upon arrival. Thank you for your flexibility during this unpredictable time of wildfires. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Due to the Gold Complex Fire (Smith and Mill Fires), we are currently under an "evacuation warning" and are closed to campers and guests. We are monitoring the fire conditions, evacuation status, and air quality closely, updating our assessments daily and hourly. Please plan to hear from us with a final update by 10 am on Saturday, July 27, 2024, for the incoming summer campers scheduled to arrive on Sunday, July 28, of the situation. We remain hopeful that the evacuation status will change from “warning” to “all clear,” allowing us to welcome summer campers to attend their program. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and flexibility during this time. If you have any questions, please reach out to officemanager@sierranevadajourneys.org.

*UPDATE 7 am, 7/23/24* Due to the nearby fires in Plumas Co., all campers from our Camp in Portola, CA, were evacuated last night. All campers and staff are safe. Although Sierra Nevada Journeys was not, and currently not, in the evacuation order or warning areas, the safety of our campers is our top priority. Most of the summer campers traveled from our evacuation location to their homes last night, a few stayed with us in Reno for morning pick-up. Thank you to our partner, Amplify Life who also assisted in the evacuation of Camp Lotsafun campers and families.

*UPDATE 11 pm, 7/22/04* Four small fires were started today due to lightning strikes near our Summer Camp in Portola, CA. This evening we EVACUATED ALL CAMPERS AND STAFF FROM CAMP.
