Fact: We've all watched the movies where the fire pull station is activated and every sprinkler head flows water in the building. This is a myth and is simply not true, fire sprinkler heads are individually activated by heat and flow water only to the areas affected by fires. Exception: There is however, a specialized deluge system that does flow water to all sprinkler heads simultaneously. This is used in high hazard areas such as power plants, aircraft hangars and chemical storage or processing facilities. These systems are never used in office buildings like Hollywood would like you to believe. #FirePreventionMonth #firesuppression #mythvsfact #themoreyouknow #silcofireandsecurity

Do You Know How to Use a Fire Extinguisher? Knowing how to properly use a fire extinguisher could save lives and property in an emergency. Here’s a simple way to remember: P.A.S.S. P - Pull the Pin: Break the seal and pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher. A - Aim: Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not the flames. S - Squeeze: Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent. S - Sweep: Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire until it’s extinguished. Fact: This statement is not entirely true and can be dangerous depending on the type of fire. Different types of fires require different extinguishing methods, and using the wrong one can actually make the situation worse. Water is only effective for Class A fires involving materials like wood, paper, cloth, and some plastics. These are common in office or warehouse settings. Water is extremely dangerous for electrical fires as it can lead to electrocution or spread the fire further. In kitchens, especially with grease or oil fires, water can cause the oil to splash and spread the fire rapidly. Water can also react violently with some combustible metals, such as magnesium or sodium, potentially leading to explosions. Make sure your workplace is equipped with the right type of fire extinguisher for each potential hazard. We can help you determine the right extinguishers to have based on your specific needs -- contact us for advice on keeping your team safe! #FireSafetyMonth #WorkplaceSafety #FireExtinguishers #SafetyFirst #FirePrevention #FireHazards #SafetyTips #EmergencyPreparedness #silcofireandsecurity #StaySafe

Fire Prevention Month Spotlight: Fire Alarm & Suppression System Maintenance Your fire alarms and suppression systems are your first line of defense in an emergency. Regular maintenance ensures they’ll be ready when you need them most! Here’s why it’s essential: Fire alarm maintenance: Fire panel: Verify your panel is communicating with your devices and the battery is in good condition. Professional inspections: Schedule a licensed technician to inspect your alarm system in accordance with local fire regulations. Check for wiring issues, sensor malfunctions, or outdated equipment. Fire suppression system maintenance: Regular inspections: Fire suppression systems like sprinklers and kitchen hood systems need regular checkups to ensure they activate properly during a fire. Check for blockages: Sprinkler heads and nozzles can get obstructed, so it's important to clear any dust or debris. Professional inspections: Schedule a licensed technician to inspect your fire suppression system in accordance with local fire regulations. Stay compliant and stay safe: Local regulations often require regular testing and maintenance of fire protection systems. Don’t risk penalties—or worse, a system failure when it’s most needed! Make fire safety a priority! Contact Silco Fire & Security to schedule your system inspection and stay protected all year round. #FirePreventionMonth #FireAlarmSafety #FireSuppression #WorkplaceSafety #SilcoFireAndSecurity #FireSafetyMatters
